I have the new Leviton outdoor plug and a wireless companion switch. But unfortunately need to find an application for it since we donāt have any ādumbā lighting outside. Might hit up a neighbor this weekend.
Start planning your Halloween projectsā¦
True! That would be a good application for an outdoor wifi plug, but I probably wouldnāt use the companion remote in that case.
Indeed, I understand your point. Matter protocol, itself, does not really care about the RF band. However, the Caseta (at least what most household people use, I would think, is using the old 433 MHz. This means that either a bridge will need to be implemented, as you mention, for the matter protocol. But my issue is: will things like Caseta blinds already designed in 433 MHz be ever upgraded? I think probably not. It would be through a bridge. āIām not saying itās easy, but it should be doable if they choose to do that.ā - yes, but what is the real incentive for them? Reading the white paper, I see that they own many RF standards from their acquisitions. Will they āmake the moveā ? Time will tell. But for sure, the fact they are in the CSA means that would be considering bridges. Since they invented Clear Connect Type X as their first native 2.4GHz, it is because they intended on having Thread devices and play that game and future iterations of devices would natively āspeakā matter as a Thread Router (for example)?
Lutron uses a proprietary frequency, ClearConnect. 434, not 433. Nothing āoldā about itā itās one of the most efficient messaging protocols in home automation.
As far as a bridge, they already have multiple bridge models. Thatās how the integration with smartthings works, itās how the integration with Apple HomeKit works, and how the integration with Alexa works.
They shouldnāt need to change anything at all in the way the existing products work, whether they are window coverings, or lighting. All that needs to change is the bridge to act as a Matter Controllerā¦ The main question is whether the existing bridge models have sufficient memory to handle the specifics of the matter protocol.
odd headline. It supports Matter just like the SB Curtain 1 and 2 do, which is via the Hub 2 Matter bridge.
But other than that, it is a fantastic upgrade to their Curtain product. I have one that iām working on a video for as we speak.
@Automated_House i have a switchbot curtain v1 connected to a mini hub. Do I need to delete and readd to the hub 2 or can it be switched over like RF remotes?
Under the SwitchBot device, you can choose which bridge it connects to (assuming theyāre in range). So you can onboard the hub 2 and then under that device change it to connect to the new hub.
New community faq:
FAQ: What do I need to add a Matter device to the SmartThings app? Do I need a bridge router device?
Hue announces Matter compatibility via firmware update for existing hue hubs in September/October.
The thread group has introduced a new logo for end devices that require a thread border router. This is supposed to help consumers, who will be able to research home automation compatibility by looking for two logos:
Matter
and if itās a thread device, a logo that will indicate whether the device itself is a thread border router, or whether it requires a thread border router.
I think itās a good idea, I just havenāt seen any manufacturers using it yet.
Once again the Matter SmartHome site (available in German, French, or English) provides in-depth details and nails an important matter issue. This time, itās the fact that the standards organization did not require that all matter controllers implement importing a matter bridge in the same way. There is no minimum standard and this means you get different results with different platforms even for the most basic functions, exactly what the Matter logo was NOT supposed to mean.
I was really excited about getting and testing Matter devices several months ago, but after getting my first few devices, the excitement turned into disappointment. I have purchased and installed several Zwave and Zigbee devices recently. Iām going to just wait and see on the matter devices for now. I donāt think this mess will be fixed anytime soon.
