In the 70-s it was called a ‘mainframe’ and it went the way of dinosaurs when personal computers came into existence. Now they’re selling the same old idea of centralized computing under the new moniker of ‘cloud computing’, but all that really is is selling excess computing capacity they’ve built up in the server farms. I guess the history has finally come the full circle.
Too many “when I was a kid” stories for this discussion. Timesharing was a wonderful idea when I was building systems in the 60’s, then personal computers and … if you want fancy automation that’s one thing. THe problem is that I want to send one bit form point A to point B and … well this is why I wrote http://rmf.vc/CILight (which I think I’ve pointed to a while gback).
I just got a Smartthings hub hoping to get rid of the monthly charges IRIS is currently doing, but after reading this, I am disappointed. I just don’t trust the internet connection in an alarm system or automation. I guess many people prefer reliability, instead of programming and spending hours in front of a computer. I read about many ideas to go over this issue, but they add costs and even monthly costs to the system. Also, If your priority is an alarm that at least wake you up if the burglar is clever enough to cut the Internet connection, Smartthings is not the one. I also own an IRIS and my intent was to get rid of the monthly fees for the IFTT’s since they offer the “magic” for $9.99 + $4.99 for internet over the air. I look forward to trying Smartthings once they have solve this issue.
Brian, I thought you are in Jersey! Optimum. When my “real” internet from Optimum is down for some reason I then get connected to Optimum Wifi which is their free hotspot everywhere (for their customers) including my home which is serviced by them.
