Install question GE 3-way zwave addon switch

Remove the tape on that switch. Is the black wire the common?

Yes I believe so

In this same Romex, where is the white wire?

Tied into all the neutrals.

Hum you must have light between the switches.

Here is a better shot of the master

That is what I thought too.

Here is a screenshot of the room. Slave on the left and master is in the far right with the light on the ceiling in the middle.

Another side of the master location.

Ok you have to have light between switches. You will need to make a slight adjustment to your fixture wiring. Ok with that?

See the top wire where black is tied to the white? That is what we need to change.

I could give it a shot.

Ok what you need to do is:

  • in that white black combo, combine the white with the neutral in your fixture. This will get a neutral to your aux
  • take the black wire and replace your load on fixture with this one. The existing black can be capped as it’s no longer needed.
  • in your aux switch box put a cap on the black wire as it’s no longer needed. Then red to traveler and white to neutral
  • in master, the black wire hooked to your current switch is line
  • the other black wire on the switch becomes your load
  • red is traveler
  • use the short pigtail wire that came with switch and connect it into neutral bundle and connect to the neutral terminal.

That’s it.

@destructure00 thanks for the diagram…that helps a lot… @ritchierich thank you for your expertise…I will get up to the fixture tomorrow and do some exploring…I will keep you guys updated. Firist thing I want to do is make sure the wiring in my fixture matches the picture in @destructure00 first pic in the his last post. That will confirm it for me.

So yes…my wiring at the fixture does indeed match the first photo in post #33…we have isolated the issue and are on our way my a solution for my situation…one general question about the GE z-wave switch…if I move out of this house and take my ST hub with me, and leave the z-wave switch behind, will it still operate like a normal dumb switch for whoever buys our house?

Yes, they will act as regular mechanical switches.

Here are fixture pictures. They match the first photo in post #33.

Cool, I see the fixture black wire in that black/black wire nut on the right. My instructions above should get you working.

only obstacle i see after connecting the wires is not getting frustrated trying to cram the big z waze switches back in…it’s tight already. Thanks
