This is where you are potentially wrong. If SmartThings continues to pull back further support from developers, for which is another step towards, developers will become increasingly disenfranchised with the platform. If developers abandon SmartThings, you will be impacted, maybe not for 6 months, or a year, but eventually you will feel it. This is why you should be concerned. This has happened in the past, search for posts on Rule Machine and the impact it had here.

I was here for the full life cycle of Rule Machine. Judging by the following thread, they learned their lesson from that fiasco.

CoRE SmartApp Changes - 1/5/17

This afternoon we’ll be updating the SmartThings Cloud Platform to enhance database permissions protocols and system reliability. This update includes additional code that is available to SmartApps. During our testing, we have found that recent versions of CoRE no longer continued to function when this update was applied because the additional code caused the CoRE SmartApp to exceed a size threshold in Groovy, which in turn generated the error: General error during class generation: Class file too large! Although it is not officially supported, we know CoRE is a fan favorite. This is a simple economic decision. St will close off the platform. That is what @slagle is so “excited” about.

This would be a horrible business decision. I can’t even count how many people on here and the FaceBook group I’ve seen switch from Wink and immediately been like “I can’t believe all the stuff i can do with these community apps!”. Closing off the system would eliminate any competitive advantage they have and also get rid of what is essentially free labor that keeps SmartThings one of the most agile and adaptive consumer grade HA platforms.

I’m thinking a paid App Store is on the cards, there’s a reason the ‘marketplace’ was named what it is.

If ST takes 15-20% revenue they will get paid for reviewing apps rather than doing it for free as per the old model.

This would be perfect! Developers potentially have an easier way to get revenue, ST gets a slice and it eliminates the users headache of having to learn to use the IDE.
