I want a rules engine, not apps

Thanks Sean! :smiley: I want this app to be great as much as you all do, so I’m taking everyone’s input seriously and ensuring that any bugs are fixed as quickly as possible. As I’ve said to many of you, I’ll take this opportunity to say once again, please help me out by rating the app on the App Store ( https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/smartrules/id957383131?ls=1&mt=8 ) and helping spread the word. Don’t forget, you can rate it again each time there is an update. This will help enable me to continue improving SmartRules.

I would like this too. I hope our pleas are heard.

Which feature are you referring to here? I hear your plea but I’m not sure what its asking for :smiley:

Sorry, I didn’t read the whole discussion, I imagine that it morphed form the original post. I, as well, want to see a rules engine.

I just got ST 2.0 hub, so I’m a total noob. Anyway, I like the “Routines” feature, but I think it could do so much more.

I have been using X-10 automation for a decade now, and I used ActiveHome Pro. That software had a good “Macro” feature, similar to “Routines,” but the “Smart Macros” add-on was a full rules engine. Drag and drop if then functionality that was powerful and easy to use.

I am a database developer so I can write code for this stuff, but I don’t have much knowledge of the protocols, so there is a learning opportunity for me. I’d rather, however, just tap my way through setting up rules.

Anyway, I’m not complaining. I have a Wink now, and the “Robots” are not even close to being as functional as the “Routines,” so I’m happy already. I would be ecstatic if a well thought-out, all-inclusive, simple to use rules builder were added. “Advanced Routines” if you will.

Again, I’m new to ST, so if my ignorance is showing and there is something I’m missing, call me out. I am very interested in learning.

Now that I have read more of the discussion, it appears that someone has written an iOS rules app. I will look into that. I also didn’t notice how old the original post was. I will be more mindful in the future. Sorry.

I didn’t think to mention the importance of nesting. I think nesting may be the key here. If “Routines” could be nested, or could contain nested conditions and actions, the application would be so much more powerful.

Example:
On Event1
— IF Condition1
— Then Action1
— --- IF Condition2
— --- Then Action2
— Else Action3

I will check out the app that is out there, but I wonder why that is not a feature of the SmartThings app. It really should be.

Again, sorry for jumping on an old thread and not reading through before posting. I’m new to SmartThings, but not new to forums so I have no excuse.

No problem. I was just curious if there was a problem I could help solve. Full disclosure, I am the creator of the SmartRules rule builder app for iOS ( http://smartrulesapp.com ), so I was curious if you had a feature request. Nesting of the rules is an interesting concept. Could you give an example of how you might use that?

Cool! I just downloaded the lite version of your app to try out.

My garage door opener has separate open and close commands. I have a garage light fixture too.

Say I want to have one button to open and close my garage door, instead of two. I also want the garage light to turn on and off, but only on when it’s dark out.

Assuming I have a photo sensor (which I don’t), the routine can include light levels. Otherwise I could do it by sunrise/sunset.

Push the button:
— Is door opened?
— No --> Open
— --- Is it dark?
— --- Yes --> Light On*
— Yes --> Close & Light Off*

*We could nest a light status condition here, if necessary. I think for most light control devices it’s not.

You could also add in a hall light, activate/deactivate alarm, etc…

I realize that we would not NEED to nest in this example, but you get the gist.

Any updates on the Android App for this program?

No, we still haven’t been able to make time for an Android version yet. It seems like there is a lot of interest recently, so its definitely on my radar.

There is a web based rule builder from the original poster of this thread @JoeC called Simple Rule Builder:

I have a feature request (I Just purchased the app and made a few rules) How about a timer condition i.e. If Condition exists for X min then Y

OOO another would be the ability to disable but not delete a rule

Absolutely. This is coming soon. Thanks for the feedback :smile:

Yup, this is also coming soon!

@obycode

What is the new “quick tap” event in SmartRules and how should it be used?
Can this provide similar functionality to the “double tap” smart app?

No, the quicktap is not like double tap; a quick tap trigger enables quick triggering of a rule from the iOS Today Screen (swipe down from the top), and from the Watch.

I agree, and Rule Machine doesn’t quite do the job either, as it does not fully support device APIs, such as that for the Ecobee3, so it is less useful than it might be.

Bryce your app is not available in the uk? Any chance of getting this for UK users?

Check out

The UK version is coming. We had to wait for SmartThings to fix their authentication process, then update the app and SmartApp accordingly. We are currently waiting for approval from Apple, so it shouldn’t be too long.

IT’S BRILLIANT!! It works superb…so far :wink: My schedules are now working! it’s renewed my faith in the system, so thanks Bryce! One thing I would love is radio boxes by my devices, so I can just quickly add multiple devices at once. gets a tad tedious having to add individual lights, but other than that the customisation aspect far excels that of samsung’s offering!
