How to get an alert in case of power outage/failure?

Then I am wondering if my unit is bad. I am only 3 feet from my hub under my desk as I am debugging the unit so distance is not an issue. Does the relay in your units default to the state they were before the power goes out after power is restored? FortrezZ customer support says they should but mine does not . It always stays off when power is restored. So I am wondering if my unit has an issue…

Yes, when power is restored they return to the state they were in. You may have a bad unit after all.

I do not know if the device handlers for water valve and mimolite are interchangeable or are the same thing?

Did you click on the “Configure” button in the smartthings app? And then retry?

The configure button can setup the device to send reports to the hub.

Also, what firmware and rev does your device report?

Are you using the correct kind of device handler?

It’s still just a Mimolite controlling a motorized water valve. Both that DTH, and the garage door one, and Twack’s original use the same code for power failure notifications if I remember right.

Interesting… Only 1 of mine are reporting that info because I just had to readd it. The other one on the garage door has been there forever (still reporting power outage), but I suspect it also has the same values.

How old is your Mimolite?

Ironically just I had a problem with my Mimolite controlling that water valve (relay kept clicking very fast forever), and I ordered a new one that just got delivered. I wonder what version that new one is.

I sent my mimolite back to get it upgraded to 1.17.

Yup, it’s going on 2 year old now. I’m going to put the new one I got today in it’s place and send the old one back for a firmware update. I just emailed FortrezZ to see if I can do that.

I have a MIMOLite. I will be using it to control a water valve. FortrezZ, the maker of the MIMOLite also has FortrezZ Water valves as well but I just have the plain MIMOLite

I have tried multiple device handlers, all of which have been designed to work with the MIMOLite, including the one directly from FortrezZ’s website link. As @johnconstantelo just mentioned the My MIMOlite -Main Water Valve V2 DH just uses it to run the MIMOLite as a water valve instead of the DH your using that runs it as a Garage Door Opener. All of them are not showing the Power Tile correctly when the device is unplugged

I have configured the App as well as deleted and reapplied the App to the MIMOLite a few times. I have come to the conclusion the MIMOLite is not working the way it should as no matter which DH published for the MIMOLite I use, the Power Tile never shows as off even when unplugged. I have ordered a new one. With the magic of Amazon same day shipping it will be arriving before 8pm tonight so I can see if it is some sort of hardware issue with the one I have now. :slight_smile:

@johnconstantelo can you please report back when you install the new MIMOLite with Ver 1.17 if your DH is still working correctly and reporting Power Failure. This could possibly be the culprit with the new 1.17 thought I doubt it.

Using my water valve DTH, I made sure I tapped on Config, made sure it worked in latched mode, and left it powered on for a few minutes.

I then unplugged it, and I did not get a power failure message, BUT it changed states as soon as I unplugged it. That shouldn’t happen in latched mode, I think.

Switch value state before powering down: SwitchBinaryReport(value: 255)

Switch value state after powering back up: SwitchBinaryReport(value: 0)

I can validate that in Latched mode I did not get a power failure alert, and the device changed states as soon as I unplugged it.

So now I’m curious about v1.15, and if I was really seeing a power failure message. Well, I wasn’t! It doesn’t matter what firmware version. I can also validate that v1.15 also changes states when power cuts out.

Next, I tested in momentary/relay mode.

Using my garage door DTH, I made sure I tapped on Configure, made sure it worked momentary/relay mode, and left it powered on for a few minutes.

I then unplugged it, and bingo I got a power failure notification: (the same thing with v1.15)

Power restored:

Summary:

In latched mode, there is no power failure events (7105) sent to the hub, and the device will change states.

In momentary/relay mode, there is a power failure event (7105), and the device will not change states (trip the relay).

My code for the garage door and valve are practically identical in terms of where power failure messages are parsed, so I’m 100% confident it is not a code issue.

I did not find any reference in any FortrezZ documentation about latched vs momentary behavior differences for power failure event notifications, or changing states when a power failure is detected.

BTW, I just sent FortrezZ support an email referencing this post to see what they say about this behavior.

Well that explains a lot! I just received my second unit and it is exhibiting the same behavior my first one did and as you describe above your post.

This explains why, when contacting support @ Fortrezz, that they told me the Relay after power failure DOES NOT go back to its original state before a power failure. They hinted they could do this in firmware and I strongly suggested they should as in any Smart Home environment there would be little (no?) reason why you would not want it to go back to its previous state .

They also have their own DH for the MIMOLite. It is located at : GitHub - fortrezz/smartthings

Even in their own DH, they are not getting the power failure alert so hopefully they take your support request and run with it to get that fixed. I will also contact them.

Hopefully they can not only debug the lack of a Power Failure mode in ‘latched mode’ but it would be good if they could get the relay to re-engage when the power goes back on if that is the state it’s in when the power goes out…

BTW @johnconstantelo, I believe if the relay is latched and the power goes out, it would have to unlatch (there is no power to keep it latched!) The firmware would need to be changed so that it re-latches once there is power to do so.

I received a response from Steve @ FortrezZ today. His engineer tested and had a power loss notification work in both latched and momentary mode. This is the note from the Engineer:

To clarify a couple of things:
• a power out notification can only be sent if there is enough residual power in the MIMOlite circuitry to continue powering the device when power goes away
• a power out notification is only sent if an association (Group 3) back to the controller is set up on that device
I just now tested with two different boards both of which have the v1.17 firmware. On both of the units I got a power notification in both latched and momentary modes when I switched power off on my power strip that had the AC adapter plugged in.

So, I can’t duplicate the problem. Perhaps they have something like a slower power dropout condition in certain cases that doesn’t allow enough residual power before dropping out completely.

Or, perhaps (unlikely, though) they were testing with different units and didn’t set up the association on one of the units.

Or, perhaps it is a SmartThings issue; is it just SmartThings users that are mentioning this?


I just replied and asked him if his Engineer could also test in a Smartthings environment using their own DH to further debug.

In the meantime, I am not and Engineer or Coder so dont know what he means by referencing ‘Group 3 Association’ above. I assume you do. Can you provide any feedback? Is this possibly a Smarthings side issue? When I hear back from them again I will let you know but your thoughts and any potential fixes based upon his feedback would be appreciated.

Yep, got the same email. I know what they mean, and both DTH handlers I tested do set that properly. I’ll reply to their email later today.

I just responded to them as well. Steve seems like a nice guy. He’s telling me he will put it in their queue to test in the smartthings environment. It might be something pretty simple from their side ?

My solution involves using a Raspberry Pi connected to my UPS to send a trigger via Webhooks/IFTTT to Smartthings.
If you have a UPS with a USB port, this is an easy setup.

This question seems to come up about every two weeks, so there are already a lot of different project report and threads about it. People approach it in different ways.

Notice that this is actually two completely separate questions.

One) how will you know that the power has gone out and

two) how are you reboot your modem if the power has gone out.

The exact details surrounding those two questions do vary from one person to another, which is why there are a number of different solutions.
