Google Home

The link was already posted but if you missed it:

It’s true that the boingboing article says if you support echo you can’t also support google home. But that particular blog article is thirdhand. The original statement was made in a closed-door session. An article was written about that in a way which would’ve allowed for either the A) or B) interpretations I mentioned above, Then other people read that article and started writing as though the original statement had been only the A) interpretation ( which is definitely buzzier, but that doesn’t make it true).

In other words, including the Alexa Voice Service in a third-party device with its own speaker, like nucleus intercom, is very different than supporting integration with Echo.

I agree that the article you linked to says “supporting echo.” I’m just not sure that it’s an authoritative source as it’s one of those thirdhand articles.

As @DITPL says, we’ll find out tomorrow, so there’s no point in worrying over it today. :sunglasses:

BoingBoing’s source for this was a Variety article. In that original article is this quote:

At the meeting in June, Google is said to have told home audio vendors that they won’t be allowed to add any other digital assistants than Google’s own to their hardware if they want to continue to use Google Cast.

That is pretty much exactly what @JDRoberts was saying.

I didn’t miss that, nor is that something that “Google wrote”.

I’m going to add a 3rd, more likely scenario (in my mind)

We know that Google are working with 3rd party manufacturers to add in Google Home support to things like Sonos (with a mic + speaker)

I’m suspecting that this relates only to hardware. Ie, if Sonos make an Echo type device, it can only integrate with Google Home or Amazon Alexa. Google won’t allow both.

If Google went ahead and said your product can only integrate with Google, then it can’t integrate with Alexa, they’d be shooting themselves in the foot and im not even sure that’d be possible.

It’d affect everything from SmartThings, Nest, Hue etc. It’d also mean that Google would have to monitor all 3rd party applications for Home and then ban them if they allow Alexa support. That’ll never happen

Ok, how about this.
Me: turn on kitchen. A: Ok, (kitchen light is switched on).
Me: kitchen light on. A (not verbatim): Can’t find a device or group named light.
If it had natural language processing it would detect that I want a light on and would guess that light or group name is kitchen.

2 minutes to go until the big annoucement

You’re confusing language processing with deduction. In the 2nd example you’ve given it a command to turn on a device named “kitchen light” that doesn’t exist. It’s not failing to do what you want because it’s performing rigid phrase matching and you are using words in the wrong order. Indeed, it would have worked just fine if you’d said, “Kitchen on”, “Turn the kitchen on”, etc. The problem is that you’ve given the device you want to control one name and are attempting to refer to it by another.

You’re grasping at straws here.

Actually…

Alexa does know “light” as a device class meaning “home automation device” and back in March when there was a minor glitch with device names Amazon support actually recommended adding the word “light” to requests to make sure that echo knew you were making a home automation request and not a Music request.

I just tested mine saying “Alexa, kitchen light on” (verbatim) and it turned it on just fine, even though the device name is just “kitchen.”

IIRC, The poster having difficulty with echo commands is a recent purchaser. There is an option in the Alexa app to do voice training, and we have found that it does make a big difference for some people. We have three housemates. One of the three of us had to do voice training before the echo had much accuracy.

In addition, there is an option under settings/history in the Alexa app to correct any individual command where echo misunderstood you. We have used this over the year and a half that we’ve had echo, and again, I think it has made a difference.

So my first suggestion to any new Echo/Dot purchaser is that you do the voice training through the app and then if you continue to have problems use the settings/history to correct it. If it doesn’t significantly improve within a week or so, it may just not be something you want to use. But I would try the available improvement features before giving up.

Google is live streaming the release of GH, Pixel phone. It’s very similar to how Apple releases products. I think missed the GH portion or they haven’t started it yet.

Here we go…

It’s official. SmartThings integration is on.

Hmmm to cancel my dots or not. Pretty tempting to switch.

I was trying to keep quiet about it and let y’all know once it was announced, but clearly there’s a leak somewhere.

I just want to say once again, having a device name that you can’t, well, Google is incredibly annoying. :rage:

Trying to find a Best Buy page for this thing is impossible. I’m guessing it’s not there yet, but there’s no way to google and find out!
