Github Integration for UK users

I wouldn’t count on it. Mind you, depends on your definition of ‘fairly quickly’

Should’ve read this forum thoroughly before spending 200 quids for this thing… The more I read the more I feel isolated from our US counterparts.

One thing I fail to understand is why the need for separate servers when the difference between US and UK ST Hub is only the Z-wave freq?

I suspect it’s more about latency and scalability.

The UK servers are physically located within Western Europe so it should communicate faster than if it were located in the US. Scalability wise it means that they can independently scale different regions as necessary.

However, I’ve said this before, the region stuff is poorly implemented. I’d go as far as saying it was even an afterthought and pressure was put upon ST to get it rolled out to multiple regions ASAP. It certainly doesn’t feel like the platform was built from the ground up with multi-region support baked in… considered maybe, but not actually implemented.

I can’t put all the blame on ST for this, I’ve been in the same situation where we had a plan with our software to only target a specific region to begin with and then suddenly the powers-that-be were jumping up and down telling us we needed to roll out to other jurisdictions and languages. It meant for some very hastily put together solutions.

I can only hope that they have plans to resolve these issues in their roadmap, because like it or not, SmartThings is now international (even if it’s only limited to 3 regions) and won’t be a success unless it can offer everything to all regions.

Despite all this though, ST is still probably the most powerful HA system around in virtue of the ability to write your own apps and device handlers.

I have been optimistic recently that the SmartThings experience is getting better with the platform improvements that are being made. However I now have quite a lot of SmartApps and as I track down issues I’m discovering that most of these are not running the latest released code. It’s a real PITA to have to routinely go through each of your SmartApps - find the matching GitHub repository and manually check if you have the latest version, and then cut/paste update through the IDE as needed.

Additionally this means that UK users are likely to experience more issues and frustrations as their hub code becomes unwittingly outdated. = more tickets to ST support and more unhappy users.

So SmartThings… it’s over 6 months since you launched and promised ‘we will fix it’ @April and still you haven’t got basic GitHub integration working. This is a fundamental part of both the user experience and engaging the developer community. You originally cited the lack of progress was now the developers not keeping pace with you - but this one is yourselves / core functionality.

Is there any technical reason why you can’t fix this @slagle or is it down to ‘we just haven’t got enough resource at this time as things are still so broken elsewhere’ or just purely ‘we aren’t really paying any attention to International at this time’ ?

C’mon guys - you treated us really badly at launch time with a half baked UK server implementation - which you enforce we use - the least you could do is fix it in a timely manner (7 months and counting !)

@xAPPO AFAIK the reason github integration is not being worked on is because a new command-line driven GitHub integration is being worked on that will be rolled out to all regions this will allow us to use other github tools to manage the integration with the ST IDE. but @slagle or @jody.albritton will be able to confirm this.

UK users interested in testing the new command line should PM me. We are currently running a closed beta of this tool.

@jody.albritton I’d be interested in the Beta.

Is that the Beta that @Aaron said we aren’t supposed to mention? :smirk:

@jody.albritton gets the Oprah moments

Look under your chair @Aaron :smiley:

@Aaron @jody.albritton how is this progressing.
The silence on this is positively ear shattering.

Silence is probably golden to them :blush:

@Aaron @jody.albritton

Can we have some update pleeezzzz…

You’ll be lucky…

We are working on a new CLI tool, but this will not be a direct replacement for Github. The CLI tool is currently in beta. I invited you to our slack channel a while back, let me know if you did not get the invite. We are working on a unified solution that will work for everyone.

@Aaron @jody.albritton

Tell us today is our lucky day…

I’ve not seen any invite.
How was this invite made? Email?

cant believe we still dont have it, i just spent the best part of an hour adding code and then realized i was on the US server as we `also have that issue of having to click location and logging in again before adding anything

I feel as a UK users we are at times ignored, github integration should be finished by now. @smartthings what the hold up?
