I have 1st generation ST motion that are powered and I still get occasional false alarms. I also know they are inside a closed room and there is nothing that moves inside it unless someone opens the door and enters. The room has no windows so there is no outside light to cause a trigger.
I donāt think the battery alone can explain it - at least in my case - because Iāve gotten false positives from detectors that are plugged in.
Since, in another thread, Ben Edwards suggested contacting support, Iām going to do that and see if they can help me troubleshoot.
Iāve determind the first gen ST motion are just plain unreliable. Has anyone else come to this conclusion and have you asked ST for replacement? Iām an early adopter and Iāve had monthly (or a couple times a month) false alarms in two different homes. A total of 4 samples all with good battery levels.
Is there a more reliable 2nd gen motion or is the solution to buy a different brand sensor? Or is it time for a different brand system overall?
The only reason I still have them in my setup is because when in powered mode, it is supposed to be ST zigbee repeater. So, I do have two of these but I donāt process its motion. I rather rely on the five Fibaroās and 2 newer generation ST motion sensor (which has thrown false alarms indoors a few times which a battery pull fixed). On a side note, Philips Hues create their own separate meshā¦
Iāve seen false triggers when battery is really low. Iām also experiencing non-triggering when I walk into the room. How long does the trigger timeout for a retrigger?
Any false alerts using the new current ST Motion sensor? The model without a USB jack.
Thanks
Lately no false alerts for me⦠How come you are not all over the PEQ thing? for me the most accurate has been ST (zigbee) and Fibaro(zwave). I started on ST platform last September and batteries on ST motions has been holding steady. Early on I had to do a battery pull on both coz of false alerts. (Rare)
I have an original ST Motion plugged into the wall that occasionally has a false alarm. I might have ST replace it, but if the newer version still gets an occasional false alarm then there is no reason to replace it. My Nephew is picking a PEQ up for me (he works at BB).
I have an original one that has false events. ST graciously replaced it for me. I still get false motion events. I just donāt use that particular motion for alarms anymore, just lighting. I feel like the motion events are related to my drop camās night vision turning on and off (it is literally right next to the motion sensor). But I havenāt gotten around to testing that.
@greg
The replacement is the new version? ie no USB jack
No night vision in that room for me, it has happened day and night.
No, the replacement was the same model. I do have the new one from ST, 2 monoprice and 2 PEQs. Have not had any false motions on anything other than the 1st Gen ST.
I had this very badly yesterday . . .
It was around 4:30pm and i was out at work as was my partner, when i received a flood of texts saying my smartthings alarm was activated and motion was detected in my office several times over a few minutes . . . so due to the fact my IP cameras are currently out of use due to moving them i asked a colleague to quickly rush me home to see what was up . . . on arrival nothing had happened, nobody had broke in, nothing had even moved . . .
I think itās a compromise⦠you have to turn up the sensitivity on most of these things to make sure that you catch events, but then the devices get tripped by shadows or sudden light changes.
I have Aeotec sensors indoors that now are fairly quiet because I moved them away from these types of areas. I have Diskstation cameras set up to monitor motion with a 10% threshold and they trip all the time. When I look at the motion-triggered recording itās always a false alarm.
As many people have said, I wouldnāt trust home security exclusively to the platform and these devices. You can probably rely on contact sensors and monitor doors and what-not, but motion is finicky to say the least. You can probably rely on them for informational purposes, but not to trigger alarms.
My Fibaro has never failed me with any fault alarm so far. I had 2 of them for about 6 month now. Battery level 88% currently.
