I plan to use SmartThings as the basis for making my new home a “Smart” home. I want to automate many lights in the house, being able to turn them on/off and dim them. I also want to control some ceiling fans and outside lights. I want to advise my electrician on what switches to buy, etc. Please make some recommendations on what dimmer switches to get. Any other advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

As far as what particular devices to get, there’s no one right answer: it really just depends on your own needs and preferences. And budget! The following thread should help describe what might differ from one model to another, so you can start to get a sense of what you might find best for you. The light switch discussion starts around post 40 in that thread.
You might also find it helpful to look at the “whole house” quick browse list in the project reports section of the community – created wiki. You’ll find a lot of discussion there about types of wiring, depth of backboxes, etc. in preparing a house for home automation.
