I want to say that support has mapped out the mesh before regarding a different issue, that was a while ago.
That is a good point, I do currently have night vision security cameras inside the home (will be removed when I move in).
But the false alarms mostly occur at random and usually in the middle of the night.
I have 2 motion sensors feet away from each other on a bay window (to control lighting between staircases) and on one occasion I did have them both trip within a couple minutes, I thought this to be a fly repeatedly running into the window in an attempt to get out.
I usually do check the voltage when replacing batteries on sensors that are no longer responsive.
What voltage would you say is low enough to cause false positives?
Rather than trying to find ghosts or environmental causes, take them temporarily off the wall one night and put them in a box. Letās rule that out first. If they do not alarm then you are right we should hunt for an environmental cause.
I found them all false alarming throughout the night when batteries not at max.
I was told I could put a piece of tape over the sensors to see if the problem persists. Iām a little hesitant to do this because I am worried about an actual break in. Its not uncommon for me to see people attempt to (non violently) get into the house. Since it is vacant and in a rural area this has been a huge problem.
I will definitely try this out after moving in (when home).
Good grief! you must be at your wits end with these constant false alarms thinking thereās a break in!!
I suggest getting a camera and forgetting about smartthings for this. Otherwise youāll go grey before you get to move in! LOL
Or just put in new batteries.
I have a 13 channel security camera constantly running on a monitor above my TV at my current house. Fortunately thereās only been one instance where they got into the house (because of an unlocked door).
However, my internet provider has been trying to get me to pay for additional data usage, because the cameras are using around 1.3TB/month. So Iād like to make ST dependable so I can turn the remote monitoring on the cameras off when not needed.
Iām afraid I have 25 of the ST motion sensors and I can tell you that they are good enough for lighting and general automation. Not reliable enough for security. Especially now since the last firmware upgrades.
I donāt want to replace batteries on 11 motion sensor only to reduce my false alarms. I know that the problem will persist because Iāve had this problem since day one.
25!!! Holy smokes! I agree they are very sensitive, but designed intentionally to be sensitive.
Note to anyone considering a ST motion sensor, if a multi sensor can be used instead of a motion, Iād recommend a multi.
I have all 10 of my motion batteries killed by the firmware upgrade last time so you you either check them with a meter suggested by @a4refillpad or replace them if you still want to keep your hair. I would say anything less than 2.8V should be change out. I have one at 89% on the app but 2.6 V on my meter.
I agree, that firmware update trashed most of my batteries too. Donāt trust those % readings at all, they seem to be almost pointless.
More dependable than what you have now may be possible. Dependable to the same level as most UL listed security systems, unlikely.
But if you get there, Iām sure a lot of people will be very happy to hear more about it.
Well, after understanding the flaws of ST, as well as why they occur, I think I can make them ādependableā.
Where my definition of ādependableā may differ from yours. ST definitely has more bells and whistles than your average security system, and using these features create additional problems. I do believe that I could make ST operate just like an average security system but that wouldnāt be to my liking. For example, I want ST to arm/disarm based on presence, and I want my motion sensors to quickly respond so I wont be left in a dark hallway.
Understood, there are just many people in the forums who separate security functions from home automation functions, mostly because of the greater reliability required for security.
But all that really matters is that you get it to a level that youāre happy with. Choice is good.
One of the reasons why I have 25 ST motions (and a lot more of other brands as well) is that I have multiples in hallways and larger rooms. For HA purposes only a single one of them going active is necessary to trigger lights and heating etcā¦
For security I pair most of them up so that I do not get as many false alarms. Since you have a few, you might want to do something similar?
Thatās essentially what Iāve done, thanks to JDRoberts suggestion to use Zone Motion Manager created by Mike Maxwell.
I think this will resolve my issue, but only time will tell.
You wonāt believe the number of contact sensors I have around the house. Every single door and window opening internally and externally are tagged. Even my cupboards have them. I find that these never false alarm so I have all of these armed when the house is empty.
Worth a try though before dismissing it, it stopped ALL my false notifications immediately. Good luck, hope you get it sorted
