Alexa wake word to trigger a light

Is there a way to get a light or switch to turn on when you use the alexa wake word? I’ve looked in the routines and you can’t just use “Alexa” as a trigger for something. Anyone have a creative idea on how to get this to work? I thought it would be fun for the kids.

Hey there! @astetnix.

As Alexa is the wake-up word for the Alexa Assistant AI. You would not be able to simply say “Alexa” and have the wake-up word trigger a light, it would trigger the Assistance to listen for your follow-up commands.

Have you tried setting up a routine for your light that is triggered by an Alexa enabled device? An example would be Alexa, turn kids power on to execute the light turning on to the specified color in the application.

You could also set up a Smart Things Button to allow the children to press the button to get the effect that you desire.

Some features of the Smartthings Button include: Control lights, electronics, and small appliances. Set multiple lights, electronics, and small appliances to turn on and off with the button. Customizable functions: single tap, double tap, long press. It does however require a SmartThings Hub or compatible device with SmartThings Hub functionality.
