Aeotec Smartswitch 7 firmware update - Zstick ZST39 - no generic driver

I noticed that Aeotec had a firmware update for Smartswitch 7s. As a ‘fun’ project I thought that I’d update.

Since Smartthings doesn’t update Z-wave firmware I followed the directions from Aeotec and get a Zooz Zstick, use Simplicity, pair as a secondary and update the firmware.

Unfortunately there seems to be no way to pair the Zstick as a ‘generic Z-wave device’. That capability is GONE from the “Add Device” options. The best that Smartthings does is pair it as a ‘switch’.

On the Simplicity side, I can, indeed, see my network but it won’t let me view existing firmware. I’m hesitant to try to update if I can’t at least select the device, click on the ‘update’ function and click on ‘view info’ before I start putting the wrong firmware on the wrong device!

How does one add generic Zwave devices to Smartthings? I tried the on-line/advanced route and Smartthings CLI, all to no avail.

Thoughts? Did I miss something simple here?

When I’ve done this with devices on a SmartThings system, I’ve first removed the device, updated it, then re-added to SmartThings. A real PITA, I am aware, but I didn’t trust my luck any other way.

Thanks! Yes, I tried that and was able to do it. As you said, a PITA if you have 100 devices etc. I was wondering if there is a way to add the stick as a 2ndary controller.

As of last summer when I did the aforementioned updates, there was. I don’t know the current status.

At least the routines using the updated devices show up as ‘broken’ so it is easy enough to re-select the now missing devices. But, as you say, it’s a lot of work if you have many Z-Wave devices. (And with SmartThings’ apparent lack of interest supporting Z-Wave devices going forward, it is anybody’s guess whether support for Z-Wave device firmware upgrades will be made any easier. I have a different manufacturer’s hub at one of my locations with this capability and it is way easier to update devices without having to go through the remove/update/re-add approach!)

I’ve seen a few discussions about using a secondary controller with ST, but no-one ever explains the process of adding it. Also, I believe whatever secondary controller you are attempting to use will have to allow itself to be a secondary vs a primary.

This is where we miss having @JDRoberts given his vast knowledge on Z-Wave and the ST platform :frowning:

Did you try a simple “Scan Nearby”?

When the device got added, what is the Mfg/Model (fingerprint)?
