And lack of cellular backup is critical in a “real” security system for obvious reasons…
It was hinted here and there (earlier, probably start-up mentality) that this would/could be added. It didn’t happen, the USB port remains useless, and it ain’t likely to happen.
Now there may be additional reasons for that, not the least of which could be non-compete agreements between folks like ADT (who want to continue selling their higher-end, professionally installed systems) and ST (who may be perfectly content with this product being in the DIY space). Speculation.
Any smartthings reps comment on this. Is the ADT hub compatible with my current smartthings sensors. Can I use the adt hub for a security arm/disarm for my current system??
Just a note from what I have read you can connect your existing Smartthings sensors to the ADT system they just can not be used for the ADT security side. I am just starting to get my house setup with Smartthings so I have stopped until the ADT system I ordered gets here. The things I am worried about is how it connects to my Network. Do I have to have Ethernet where the panel is or can I do WiFi? I am a little worried as where I want to put the panel I do not have an Ethernet port but I could install an Access Point with a Ethernet connection. Also I want to know how it is powered. I hope to resolve all this when I receive the unit or it may be getting returned.
I’ll be buying this next week. My current use case is a weekend home with an old-ish ADT security system, a mix of hardwired and wireless sensors along with 3 alarm panels in the house.
I currently have a smartthings v2 hub that mainly controls light switches and a pool pump relay, luckily I never installed any window or door sensors over the last few years I’ve had ST in place.
I’m currently in the middle of a renovation and have to rip out my current ADT control boxes anyway as they are in closet space in a room that is going to get converted into a bathroom in the next month or so, so the timing of this is perfect.
So my current plan is to cancel my current ADT plan ($60 a month for full security monitoring), take a day to rip out the old system and all sensors completely, install the new panel and a few sensors to see how it goes.
A few areas of concern:
-Still unclear as to what app I can use on my smartphone, the stock ST app or will there be a new ADT branded one?
-How easy will it be to move all of my current “things” over to the new hub
-Powering the device looks like I can hardwire it to the back of the device or use a barrel jack, but it ultimately has to plug into a wall outlet somewhere on the other end for power?
-Will be interesting to see how the backup cell service works as well as integration into existing wifi network
-Will there be support for multiple panels? I’m guessing not as the panel works as the hub to which all devices need to eventually need to talk back to. And no need for multiple panels now as your smartphone can achieve the same function.
I will post an update with whatever I find in the next two weeks
Thanks for the info as I had not seen that. It is geat news. The power I can handle as there is a plug and switch nearby so i could tap into either one of them.
Yeah it’s pretty unnerving that this close to the release date there are so many unanswered questions, particularly for a device that supposedly you can just pick up and go install yourself at home.
The power thing is interesting, because all things considered you would need a regular wall outlet, plus a battery backup of some sort, unless they go the U-Verse route and the thing comes with a UPS.
I’m surprised nobody has found the FCC filing for this thing to see exactly what it comes with.
They must’ve put it through one of the confidentiality channels. There isn’t even a public Z wave certification for it yet.
Once it’s released to market then more of the documentation has to be revealed, but companies can apply to have it kept secret until then if it’s not using anything unusual.
I don’t remember reading that the LTE backup is included in service with ADT, I assumed it was an addon…
It’s worth noting that the Security hub operates over wi-fi by default, but it has an LTE connection integrated as a backup. ADT says that unlike most other security monitoring solutions, they are not charging extra for the LTE service.
Hi everybody.
Just now I got the answers to my questions which i posted in this forum 12-13 days before. The answers are provided by their online representative.
This panel is "Smash and crash" protected. Will send the signals out to ADT if the internet is cut/panel smashed (provided we took the monitoring service).
Battery life is 24 hours.
Has delay feature (Any open/close sensor set as an entry/exit point will allow 30 seconds to disarm and 60 seconds to get out once the system is armed)
No extra charge for home automation (unlike other ADT services where you would have to upgrade to ADT pulse if you were to use their hubs for home automation).
You can arm/disarm using ST app form your phones.
no limits on number of phones for each system/home.
you dont need to download anything from ADT (The ADT panel and the ADT devices all come with their own protocol, which reports directly to ADT. You only need to have the SmartThings app to set up the ADT panel).
There is no videoCore in the hub, so it can’t control the camera. (I had asked specifically about SkyBell camera).
Home lighting automation using sensors and smart bulbs/switches can be set up
There is no contract with ADT for monitoring. Just month to month. Cancel anytime.
Secondary panels can not be supported as of now, might be possible in future.
Right now there is no promotions going, I asked for any specials. (Does not harm to ask, correct?
I’m really crossing my fingers that there is a Pulse integration coming down the pipe. My entry points are Pulse and everything else ST. I’m too cheap for two sensors on the same door so hopefully shortly this will be remedied.
Of course, I’m still waiting for the ADT IFTTT integration…

Regarding “Home Automation” there are a few major questions that remain, and they are not necessarily interrelated:
Will the ADT Automations be able to incorporate both SmartThings Things (and sensors) along with ADT’s? I presume this would be done via cloud-cloud connectivity with ADT or local bridging of the SmartThings Hub portion of the Panel with the ADT portion.
Will the ADT sensors be usable as SmartThings “Things”? This is similar to #1, but would permit “Automations” to be implemented on the SmartThings side (ie, in SmartApps, including CoRE), and accessible to SmartThings integrations like ActionTiles, IFTTT, etc.
Will the ability to Arm/Disarm ADT have an API accessible to SmartThings developers / SmartApps (I fear not… Even SHM is not supposed to be accessible to us!).
Is there any basic or substantial view and control of SmartThings Things available via the ADT Panel? ie, Can it function as a “dashboard” or “SmartThings App” itself? While I am not worried this would substantially replicate ActionTiles and hurt our sales, … I know this would be a bonus for folks who buy this system. Frankly, personally … I don’t think it will have any “substantial” SmartThings view & control; perhaps essentially none, actually.
But we’ll find out as soon as these are examined thoroughly in Community homes!
So it looks like this was released today. Anyone installed it yet? Haha I’m sure there’s someone!
Best Buy dropped it to $499 and it looks like the first two months of monitoring are included. I’m itching to dump my Spectrum Intelligent Home, and this is looking like a good option. Not to mention PayPal gives 6 months no interest financing, so that lessens the initial sting.
Ordered via Bestbuy.com yesterday for local pickup here in Manhattan (the $50 discount was a nice surprise)
-Samsung SmartThings ADT Home Security Starter Kit White
-Samsung SmartThings ADT Smart Smoke Alarm White
-Samsung SmartThings ADT Smart Carbon Monoxide Alarm White
-Samsung SmartThings ADT Wireless Smart Door and Windows Sensor White
Picking the kit up today as it was the only one of the items available for pickup, the others will arrive via shipping Wednesday. Another odd note, I chose one store for pickup at the 23rd and 6th store which they said would be ready in an hour, but never get notice until much later in the day and the store is different, 44th and 5th.
Will post updates one I have the kit in hand this morning
