Hi, is there currently a way to add the myQ garage door controls to SmartThings? I know there used to be an old method that no longer works.
There is currently no method to integrate MyQ to SmartThings.
There are third party devices that can connect your Security+ 2 Chamberlain Garage Door Opener to SmartThings such as Meross, TailWind and Ratgdo.
I did post yesterday that the new generation Security+ 3 Chamberlain Garage Door Openers - all 3rd party accessories have been shut down except for any Chamberlain partners which requires a subscription to MyQ.
I had a chat with Meross in the past month, and I believe their integration will continue to function as long as Chamberlain openers are still able to pair to Homelink and built in car remotes, although the user must request a free “accessory” compatible with their particular opener.
Contact Meross directly at support@meross.com directly with any questions, specifically to confirm that they have an updated accessory compatible with the white LEARN button on Security+ 3.0 devices.
One of my door openers recently failed after 25 years, but there were still Security+ 2.0 openers available and, out of an abundance of caution, I chose one of those. Home Assistant has a Meross LAN integration to keep things local, if that’s one’s preference.
Choosing another brand of opener may be a better way to go (and a means of protest), but in my case, I was lazy and swapping one Chamberlain for another made the installation extraordinarily easy.
I am using the konnected black module and its been working great with smartthings.
As far as anyone knows, it it the goal of Chamberlain to drop Homelink support, too? They are getting harder and harder to justify as a garage door opener choice. Unless, of course, you wish to buy into their whole ecosystem, including cameras, etc.
I’m pretty ignorant on this but wouldn’t dropping homelink cut them off from every (most, many?) built-in buttons in vehicles?
I have been using RATGDO on my Liftmaster 8500 for little over a year now and have no issues.
Does Chamberlain do over-the-air firmware updates? If not then any device that’s currently working should continue to work, right?
Unlikely. It is one thing for Chamberlain to toss aside the relatively small number of individuals intent upon integrating their garage doors into their Smart Home. It would be quite another to do so to the 100 million people who have Homelink installed in their cars (though, obviously, not everyone who has it uses it. ).
RATGDO won’t work with the Security+ 3.0 openers, which were just recently introduced.
Even if they did (and they don’t, so far) the older openers don’t have the electronics necessary to implement Security+ 3.0
I’m lowering my expectations. Going to revert to a simple contact sensor so I can at least inquire as to whether the door is opened or closed.
The good thing is that MyQ has its own timed automations to close the garage. So if you forget, you can have it close on its own at 10pm or whenever. Which makes the only real loss the ability to open it via voice command.
I’ve got two LiftMaster doors with built-in MyQ that I specified when the house was built in 2018. Was not my best decision. I never trusted any of the methods to subvert Chamberlain’s “security” measures.
I ended up sticking a couple of Z-wave tilt sensors. As you said it let’s me keep track of open/close state. I also do things like turn on exterior lights when the doors open at night. I don’t do any automated closing, just send notifications if they’re open for over an hour or at night.
I have a Chamberlain MyQ garage door opener. I bought the ThirdReality Smart Garage Door Opener from Amazon to control the garage door. The ThirdReality device is a matter certified device. I have it paired with SmartThings and Alexa, which allows voice commands to open and close the garage door. It uses your extra garage door opener controller mounted inside the device to control the main unit garage door opener so there are no issues with needing to bypass garage door security protocols. I had a SmartThings tilt sensor on the garage door at first. It was unreliable; the door moved too slowly for the sensor to pick it up (had the same issue with a skylight).
I’d love to have a tilt sensor for each that WORKS. Can’t be Matter, as my hub is too old for that. So Zigbee or Zwave.
The Ecolink tilt sensors I mentioned a couple of posts back are Z-Wave, react instantly, and have been solid performers on my V2 hub. Sorry to see they’re unavailable.
Google search turned up a Third Reality Zigbee tilt sensor on Amazon for $20. Can’t vouch for it but I do have some Third Reality pocket sockets that work well.
I just saw on a different forum a contact sensor mounted onto a hinge, attached to an interior panel of the door.
I’ll be getting a new door soon. Will utilize this idea. Might even use two contact sensors and two hinges with a virtual configuration.
If contact A is closed and contact B is closed, then the door is closed.
If contact A is closed and contact B is open, then the door is in motion.
If both contacts are open, then the door is open.
That’s really not necessary. I’ll likely just use a single sensor. But it’s a fun idea.
To be clear, assuming you’ve got a V2 hub, it could be Matter, just not Matter-over-Thread. My V2 is happily running some Matter-over-Wi-Fi devices and is linked to my Aqara hub via Matter-over-Bridge.
But any Matter battery operated sensor is most likely to be Matter-over-Thread so I’m just being pedantic. 
I remember seeing that setup here somewhere a few years ago. It seemed to me it would be very finicky to get aligned.
I have the SmartThings multi-purpose sensor, but only used the main component for its tilt capability, not the open close feature as I couldn’t mount the 2nd piece close enough to detect open/close. Prior to replacing my garage door and opener a couple of years ago I had to use 2 of them because, as you mentioned, they were unreliable. So my code in Sharptools used to use 2 of them.
Then I got a new door and a MyQ opener. Since the MyQ can tell me whether it’s open or closed in its own app, and I didn’t want to put more screws than I needed to into the new door, I only mounted one sensor and paired the code down to just use the one sensor. It still fails occasionally, but if it reports open when I think it’s closed or vice versa, I just check the MyQ app and trust it. I have even opened and closed the door remotely with MyQ just to get the ST sensor to report correctly.
And as you also mentioned, I need the ST sensor to do stuff like alert me when the door is open too long (which MyQ can do), or it gets opened while I am away, turn on lights when we arrive home, etc. So yes, it would be more convenient to just link to MyQ. Or get a sensor that is more reliable.
I got tired of the issues with MyQ integrating with ST, so I replaced them on both Genie garage door openers with Meross. They have been working very well for a year or so.
Tailwind IQ3 is compatible with MyQ (anythiing except the WHITE learn button) openers and will integrate with SmartThings, although its thru the cloud.
At some point I’d like to write a local Edge driver for it but i’ve not had a chance to pick up the controller yet.
