Ok , Iāve been thinking about this for a while, I like the Ring Alarm system because of itās monitoring ( insurance deduction) and battery cellular backup. I like SmartThings because of itās automation and tons of integration.
I think Iāve figured out a way to have both by using Konnected IO and the Ring retrofit alarm kit:
Use the Konnected IO to activate dry contact relays that will be connected to the alarm retrofit panel. This way you get to use your SmartThings sensors for both SmartThings and Ring.
For example when motion sensor activated, SmartThings will cause Konnected IO to output channel 1 that will be connected to Input of Ring Retrofit panel.
Not true. Smart things controls all things. ZWave, Zigbee and Wifi devices.
Sorry if that was confusing. In the post you were responding to, I was saying that the āsmartthings brand Smartplugsā are zigbee or WiFi. The ones sold in a box with āsmartthingsā name on it. That was and is true, although those zigbee devices are no longer being made under that name and will be sold under the āAeotecā name instead.
The smartthings hub does have a zwave radio, a Zigbee radio, and a Wi-Fi radio in it, but thatās not the context in which this discussion was taking place.
The person to whom I was responding was asking if they could take a ring alarm base station, which is Z wave, and connect a smartthings brand Smart plug directly to that controller, and the answer to that question was and remains no, because the ring base station uses Z wave.
In this case itās all about context.
Yes it was. Thank you for clarifying that.
Did you get a chance to try this? Iād like to have my door and window sensors connected to both SmartThings (for automation) and Ring (for security monitoring). When I setup my sensors with Ring, they connect automatically to Alexa but there isnāt a way that I could find to have them also connect to SmartThings. The solution you posted sounds interesting but Iām confused about how Konnected IO would input from SmartThings and output to the Ring kit. From the description of the Konnected IO, I got the impression that it sent output to SmartThings but not the other way around.
If your ring sensors show up in Alexa as contact sensors they could be used to trigger an Alexa routine.
The Alexa routine could operate a simulated Alexa switch created in ST, and that switch could then trigger an automation in ST.
No hardware needed.
