[RELEASE] Samsung SmartCam Motion Detection Switch

I haven’t done it, I’ll give it a go tonight and see if I can work it out. I believe the samsung smart cam app can email you motion pictures, so on IFTTT I would set the trigger as email with subject that matches the emails from smartcam/Google integration, the action side of IFTTT would be to set motion to active or some momentary virtual switch that I include in the smart home monitor in ST app.

I was able to setup motion triggered snapshot notification emails from Samsung smartcam app to my Gmail account.
It was tough, but I had to create an app password through Google account manager website, just for the smart cam app, what a pain that was.

Also, I was able to create a Gmail filter for those emails with snapshots, and created a label matching that filter.

Afterwards, I was able to go-to ifttt app and create a new applet, trigger was “Gmail” new email message in label. The action I chose was smartthings: turn on : my virtual momentary switch . It works!

So with the awesome dth from @airdrummingfool and ifttt my Samsung smartcam now is an armed motion sensor for my home alarm. I don’t know about reliability, that’s a few moving parts

Hi,

I am brand new to this, thank you all for your help so far. I am struggling to finish configuration. My smart cams do not have an IP address. I am using model numbers: SNH-C6417BN and the firmware number is 1.03_170322. They connect straight to my router which is the BThome hub (i am from the UK).

Please, can you advise if they will work?

Thanks

Joe

Never mind, figured out. Ended up accessing my router to find the IP. Keep up the good works guys.

Did you get your SNH-C6417BN recognized by SmartThings? Mine is on a Samsung Connect Home wifi hub. It works fine in the SmartCam app, but for SmartThings I can’t get it to do anything beyond register. After than it shows up but “switch==off” and the app always shows “Checking status…” for both the camera handler and the MotionDetect handler.

Actually…I can make the camera do exactly one thing in the app. I can click reboot and it does. I have automations set attempting to record video in response to other sensors, but no love.

I have got it recognised, i set it via the smart cam app then added it to smartthings afterwards. See pictures below. The "on and “off” buttons work, but I am unsure if the motion sensor works.

Is there a good way of checking if the device handler works for motion sensor?

Thanks

Joe

Thanks for working on this.
However, I think Samsung and smartthings should have this working on the ‘official’ smartapp.
Samsung hardware is often terribly let down by the software.
I’ve got two Samsung SmartCams, and I’d have bought more, but the software doesn’t properly support them.
I’m not going to mention my Gear Smartwatches and the lack of promised apps and features.
Samsung need to work much harder on their software.
It should not be left to community developers to build the software needed to make Samsung products work as intended.

I have the SNH-V6414BN, firmware version 1.15 and unfortunately I cannot get this to work. The switch registers in the Smartthings app and claims to turn on and off but it doesn’t actually change anything with the camera.
Could this be a firmware issue or might I have something set-up wrong??

Very likely is your camera IP address dynamic and changing with every camera reboot.
These cameras reboot a lot.
Try to assign static IP address or permanent DHCP IP

Thanks Mike, I did set them to static and got them to work. Another part of the problem might have been that I wasn’t very patient. It seems that it takes a good minute to update the setting in the camera.

Settings updates from this DTH are applied virtually instantly (changes aren’t shown in the SmartThings UI until the camera has confirmed the command).

However, if you’re checking the settings using the SmartCam app (at least on iOS) they may appear to be delayed. In my experience, the SmartCam iOS app does not refresh the settings for whatever screen you’re on when you app-switch away and back (even though it shows a spinner) - you must back out to the menu and then re-enter the section to get it to update.

@Joseph_Bowker To clarify, this is only a motion detection setting switch - it is used to turn motion detection on the camera on and off. The device handler does not alert or change state when motion is detected by the camera (though ideally it would have this feature one day).

If you want to double-check and see that the motion detection setting is being correctly enabled/disabled, you will have to login using the SmartCam app and review the event history to see that the camera was recording motion when the DTH was set to “on”, and not recording when the DTH is set to “off”.

deleted - should have read the whole thread!

@airdrummingfool - just so I am clear. This is what enable the motion based recording through SmartThings, but nothing else right? So as long as I have an SD card I will be able to access recordings. Correct?

Yes, this DTH is only used to enable and disable the SmartCam’s built-in motion detection, which records onto the SD card plugged into the SmartCam.

I bravely upgraded one of my SNH-V6414BN cameras to firmware version 1.15_171212 and am happy to report that it did not break communication with the Device Handler

Thanks!
Justin

Works with my two SNH-C6417BN SmartCam HD +. Just what I needed. Thanks.

@airdrummingfool, I just upgraded the firmware on my cameras and confirmed your device handler still functions as expected:
SNH-P6410BN cams upgraded to Firmware v1.12_180413
SNH-V6414BN cams upgraded to Firmware v1.16_180413

Thanks,
Justin

I am trying to add this camera to my neighbors hub but see Samsung has removed it from the list of supported cameras. This is crazy to me… it was the only camera supported originally which is why I told them to buy it 2 years ago. I have emailed support too but thought someone here might have a workaround or a copy of the old smartapp.
