[OBSOLETE] D-Link DCS-5020L Tilt/Pan Day/Night IP Camera DeviceType (Now With Video Streaming!)

Smartthings has stated that they are working on adding additional functionality to their default camera devicetypes though they haven’t given any timeline to my knowledge so I wouldn’t get your hopes up for anything soon.

You could possibly create a devicetype similar to this one for the DCS-5029L with expanded functionality but you would have to figure out the applicable REST commands to manipulate the camera.

As far as using the motion detector, there isn’t any way to do it without a direct integration from SmartThings and D-Link. Currently you can only request information and change settings, you can’t actually ‘listen’ to the device for things like motion or sound.

Sorry, I’m confuse. I’ve added the device type but I’m only getting a black screen. Am I doing something wrong?

Do I need to add a smart app as well, to use the device?

Thanks!

For those having the same issue, I made a newb mistake when adding the device. Under TYPE, I chose “D-Link Camera” instead of scrolling to the bottom of the device list and choosing the DSC-5020L device.

Still can’t see video yet, but I think based on the above reply from @blebson I never will. That said, image capture doesn’t work but I’ll keep trying.

Sounds like your IP or PORT might not be set correctly. Please ensure you are using your LOCAL IP/PORT. It will most likely be something like 192.168.1.X Port 80.

Yep, that was it. Thanks.

since this is a device type natively supported in smartthings now, perhaps this can be adapted to use the motion detection capability to be a “motion detector” device type. Then this can be used to trigger a recording from SmartThings home security.

Lastly, it would be good to see if it’s possible to experiment with saving video the the microSD card. I know people will be begging for this.

thanks!

From my understanding this camera is not currently nor planned to be supported by SmartThings officially. We don’t even have full access to the video functionality they are using with the newer D-Link cameras. Due to how the hub communicates with this camera there is no viable way to use it as a motion detector without significant lag (5+ minutes), and even then it’s only through IFTTT, not a SmartApp or Devicetype itself.

cool. 5+ minute polling makes it moot then. thanks for the quick reply

This devicetype has been updated to allow the use of my new D-Link Smart Security Camera SmartApp:

Added toggle for Night Vision for On/Off/Auto.

I’m a little confused here.

I’m not a novice as I have added plenty of device types and smart apps.

But after I add the device type, if I go and search for new device, nothing is found? How do I actually add the device to the new device type?

These devices are a unique case, you need to actually create a device in IDE and then assign this device type to it in order to get it to work. Once you create it in IDE it will show up in the app. In the app you can assign it to a room and full out all the settings like IP and port.

OK great… When creating a new device in ide…what do I put in for the info? For device network ID?

You can put on anything you want for the device network ID, the device type will overwrite it automatically with the correct one. Only thing you don’t need to fill in is ZigBee ID.

Really appreciate your help. I’m def getting father, but still not there. It seems as though I have everything set up. I’m seeing events in my event log. But see no picture in the app?

To confirm, you used your local IP and port? It’s normally something like 192.168.x.x, port 80. Also, you should be using the password and username for the local website for the camera (the site that comes up even you put in the local camera IP into a web browser).

Also, what is showing in the live log? Any errors?

No errors just says entity updated over and over.

OK I have a picture now in the app. But if I use the controls the picture doesn’t move in the app.

The controls are working though because I have the video up on my computer screen and the controls are moving it back and forth.

But the app just remains the same picture.

The picture is still, it only shows the last picture taken. After you move the camera you need to take a new picture to see the change.

Is it anyone else’s experience that the camera is really flaky. It will work one minute, then I can’t connect outside my house… Then the Smart app works…then the Smartapp is slow…

I haven’t really noticed any slowdowns or disconnects. The one thing I have noticed however is that the camera does have an input limit. If you tell it to do too many things at once it will tend to do none of them.

Is it showing any errors when it doesn’t work?
