I have an automation working that turns some lights on when I unlock my Kwikset lock. But it’s annoying to have lights turn on when I unlock it from the inside to go out. Can I refine my automation to trigger lights only when opened from the outside?
I’d put a motion sensor over the door (on the inside) and exclude running if the sensor shows motion.
The stock device handlers do not provide that level of visibility or control. However you can differentiate between outside and inside controls if your locks report it and with this device handler: [RELEASE] Universal Enhanced Z-Wave Lock Device Handler for Schlage, Yale, Kwikset, IDLock, Popp, Danalock, August Pro, Keywe, Philia, Samsung
You may also need to use this app to create the automation to turn on lights when the keypad is unlocked from outside and not manually: [RELEASE] Lock User Management (LUM)
Check them out for more details.
Thanks very much. I’ve found the handlers and all pretty hard to figure out. I’ve tried but mostly found it beyond me. Do you know of a simple way t omanage these or a really clear tutorial?
Thanks,
Dick
The following community FAQ explains the basic concepts and terminology for using custom handlers. The app examples are from the classic app, but again the basic ideas and terminology is still the same. Why don’t you start with that and see if it helps clear up any of the confusion.

Yes it can be intimidating for new users but essentially it’s a simple copy paste job. See these two links for step by step instructions on how to install them

You make it sound so easy, but I keep getting sent around in circles. I click on https://community.smartthings.com/t/release-lock-user-management-lum/7043 to get the SmartAPP (I think I’ve already installed the Device Handler) and it sends me back to your advertisement. How do I install the SmartAPP?

Looks like you figured it out
Yes I did and it’s been working very well. But just today (right after an update) I’m getting inaccurate notifications that the lock was unlocked with the key. Kind of alarmed me this morning. How can I approach fixing this?
Thanks,
Dick
Notifications come from the lock, it could be a delayed event from the mesh / platform. If it happens again try to factory reset your lock and check if you mesh has any ghost devices which can cause delays.
