I went ahead and installed the dimmer slide switch exactly how I have pictured and it worked beautifully! The wifi switch I have is pretty much a relay type switch since it does rely on the neutral wire. Please note I used a single pole wifi switch and a single pole dimmer switch.
Hope this helps anyone with the same dilemma.
ORIGINAL QUESTION:
Hello,
I currently have a single pole z-wave on/off wall light switch that turns on/off my lights via push of the button OR via the app. I currently installed some LED recessed lighting and no want to add a single pole dimmer slider switch AFTER the z-wave switch. I do not want to have to purchase a new z-wave light switch/dimmer combo.
My single pole z-wave switch has a green (ground), white (neutral), black (hot), and red (output) wires. The single pole dimmer slider is going to be a leviton-6672-1lw with two(2) black wires and a green (ground) wire. I was thinking of simply twisting in the dimmer from the red output wire to the dimmer black input wire and then hook the black output wire to the recessed lighting black wire. So the dimmer slider would always be set to the brightness and the wifi switch will act as an on/off switch strictly.
Logically, I am thinking it will work, but I am not quite sure if it is safe and wanted to ask this question here before I wire it up. I am experienced in automobile electrical wiring, but I know that home wiring is totally different LOL.
Please help. Thanks in advance!
Please see attached image for a drawing on how I plan to wire the two switches up together.
Thanks for your reply @Automated_House (btw I like your username, looks like you are into hondas like I used to be. Im old school LOL too)
Again, only reason is I already have expensive z-wave light switch already previously installed (in 3 different and totally separate locations to be exact). I do not want to have to purchase 3 new combo light switches, so I simply want to add a dimmer in to control my newly installed recessed lighting.
z-wave (wifi) dimmer switches are super expensive, especially when I already have existing wifi switches. I can get slider dimmers for less than $10. Also, I already have 2-gang boxes installed there already. So no big deal. We will prob not be sliding the dimmers frequently, so the wifi switch will be used a good percentage of the time just to turn it off/on. I just needed confirmation that it will work.
ok, that’s where you had me confused. Z-wave and wifi switches are two separate things. You could probably put a dumb dimmer in-line on the load. Sounds like its a 3-way switch, so make sure you have the proper load wire.
