Harmony Home Control

IDK, im using a virtual switch with IFTTT and mine does that now w/o the beta to be honest, IFTTT responds quick too

i’ve got the latest software available for both of my hubs (although it’s not the same software since one is the keyboard and the other the smart control) and the functionality works on both of them.

Quick update.
We’ve made some changes that’s pending review from Logitech. We’re currently in their QA queue.

Almost 2 weeks since that last update. What’s the word? I recently had to replace a hub that had the old integration fully working, and I’m missing my ability to trigger Harmony activities. Thanks!

There were some bugs identified and will be working with Logitech to resolve them.

In the meantime you can configure sensors to trigger activities on the harmony end (you need to provide access to harmony to see events from those sensors).

Credit where it is due @thegibertchan, great work on the new integration that a good few of us are beta testing . . . ive not had a single issue and i am already looking forward to further developments on this when harmony opens up there api functionality a bit more . . . but as it stands you’ve done a great job.

@AutomateEverything Are you beta testing from the SmartThings side or Logitech Harmony side?

@chevyman142000 - ST side . . . but i believe its nearly up now so they are not adding people to it, which is good overall as it means it will be being made public

Thanks for the update! Definitely looking forward to the full integration again!

The use cases I had working involved ST directly triggering the Harmony activities, and are not easily adapted to sensors. Maybe I can fake a sensor in the interim. Could be an interesting project at a minimum.

Harmony has an IFTTT channel for their hubs, you can do a lot that way to have ST triggers for Harmony activities. It all depends on whether you run into polling lag (which hopefully the direct integration will largely eliminate.)

i’m a little cofused about why there is an “on” and “off” for each individual activity in the iftttt channel. It would seem a single “off” would do. I have managed to get polling from the harmony activity to monitor sensors: if no motion in the room for 45 minutes, the tv turns off. I can’t wait for this to work properly. I would love for smartthings to know which harmony app is currently running. why? I have some IR devices that aren’t media devices, but harmony insists on treating as such (a heater and AC). When I run an activity that has only smartthings in it for example, it runs and then goes back to the last activity automatically. But for my AC I would have to create an activity for the AC unit to toggle the power, then have smartthings store the currently running activity if any, launch the ac activity, then launch the previous activity. This is the only way I can think of to get smartthings to control my IR devices, and I want to be able to shut off the ac if the room is empty.

I believe Harmony only runs one activity at a time. But it tracks the transitions between them to decide which devices to turn off.

Not quite that simple.

With the addition of “home control” features to the Harmony, there are now two different types of activities, “entertainment activities” and “home control activities”.

Any activity which includes an “entertainment” device is automatically an “entertainment activity”. An activity which only contains “home control” devices is a “home control activity”.

You can only have one “entertainment” activity running at a time, but you can have as many “home control” activities running as you want.

Unfortunately, there are many devices in the Harmony database (including air conditioners and heaters) which are currently considered “entertainment” rather than “home control” devices as they predate the introduction of the home control features. My current understanding is that all IR controlled devices are currently considered “entertainment” devices.

Thanks, that makes it clearer.

The single “off” does exist, but it’s actually in the “Start Activity” section. It’s called “Power Off”. It’s equivalent to hitting the power button on the remote to shutdown whatever the current activity is.

@Sticks18 that it does (y) however ive still no idea why you cant open up several activities (say one in living room and one in media room or bedroom) and shut them down separately without shutting down everything . . . bit of a flaw if you ask me . . . kyle

Not a flaw really. It’s merely an advanced scenario that Harmony isn’t designed to accommodate. Harmony is designed to control one room where the hub resides and one activity by automatically adjusting devices when you change activities. If you have multiple rooms, Logitech would want you to have multiple hubs/remotes.

PS: They do have the individual activity “off” in IFTTT, so maybe there is a way to turn them off separately.

See my earlier post, above, about running multiple activities.

You can certainly stop individual activities on Harmony remotes with screens, as well as via their iOS and Android apps.

E.g.

The leftmost screenshot shows the “Watch TV” activity running on a Harmony Ultimate, denoted by the power icon on the left hand side. Pressing on that icon will stop that activity.

If there were other home control activities running, they would also have the power icon shown on their left side (the list scrolls up and down with a drag). Pressing the power icon on their entry would also stop them.

Pressing the physical power button on the remote, however, would stop ALL currently running activities.

The activity list shown in the iOS and Android apps is very similar to this. E.g. here is the app running on an iPad:

For the multiple room scenario, yes, multiple hubs would be the recommended solution - one hub per room. Whilst physical remotes are associated with a specific hub, the iOS and Android apps can easily switch between hubs.

im sure we all agree however it wouldn’t hurt or hinder in any way to add the option to shut down one activity without effecting others . . . it would only add to the use cases possible

also, the whole concept of harmony is one remote controls all, having one hub and remote per room and having to switch between hubs on the app is a really poor excuse for them to make money obviously, it would be incredibly easy to make the power button next to each activity only turn on/off the associated products with that activity and not everything else… only been able to run one main activity at once is a bit poor in anyone’s eyes surely…

i have one hub happily running two rooms though, and also operating a TV bed lift mechanism . . . plus several other things around the house, where there is a will there is a way, a complicated one however haha . . . but it would be made much easier with the above mentioned feature . . . put it this way it couldn’t do any damage could it ? haha

you can set the hub to “leave devices powered on” until total power is pressed. I used to do this with a 16-device harmony 659 remote.
