The ST status page could show an automatic graph of cloud latency or loss, and an individual manual user-initiated test of round-trip command lag or loss, among other metrics.

I agree that contacting support (for any product or service, actually) is a daunting prospect when the problem I’m experiencing is not deterministic. My ISP (Comcast) for example, gave me spotty service over a few weeks last year – turtle slow bandwidth would last anywhere from a minute or two to an hour. It shouldn’t be my responsibility to run continous diagnostics… Importantly, I certainly believe SmartThings’s support is magnitudes better than Comcast: but with that disclaimer out of the way, Comcast’s handling was atrocious: i.e.; Web chat asked me to reboot the cable modem but keep my browser open so they could resume chat. You can guess how well that worked out. The problem resolved itself after a few weeks with no intervention on my part and no notice from Comcast. Some research…

The major positive impact that SmartThings Hub Version 2.0 will provide is local caching and execution of all SmartApps that do not require any services external to the LAN. SmartThings will still be “cloud-centric”, but this is new hub v2 architecture should bring tremendous benefits in performance and reliability.
