Being sent a replacement hub, how do I migrate?

I guess I could have worded it better. It seems I signed up for the dev
account. Of I had some sort of root access to the st hub that would be
great. Also trying to figure out why there is a limitation of one hub per
location. This completely undermines the mqtt protocoll architecture of
message and broker listeners. I see a lot of data in the back end web site
of st. Is there any ability to manipulate it. Or do you have an API I can
use to make higher level functions happen.

I’m not affiliated with ST, I’m just a guy who likes to DIY, within my limited capabilities, as well as learn a ton from others in this community with much more substantial technical backgrounds than me.

So I’m probably not the one to answer all of your questions, but I’ve read enough to know that despite the options that ST gives us to tinker around the edges, much of their system is proprietary and locked down.

You could have worded it better?

How about completely different!

Your reply to Mark makes absolutely no sense.

You asked about exclusion of devices and you were given a set of instructions for how to perform general exclusion then be able to re-pair your devices to a new hub as a way to assist you and that’s how you reply?

What logic or reasoning of his is incomplete? IOT has such a bad rep because engineers didn’t think about an exclusion process?

If you dislike how they do things and you want to see some different changes in the future, Mark gave you the link with all the job openings over at ST. Vent your frustration that way, not shooting the messengers in the community

Seriously!!! so still no backup restore? unbelievable! I don’t know any IT device that doesn’t have a restore process…routers, mobile phones, servers, PCs, smartwatches, microwaves. ok maybe not the microwave…but this is a SMARTthings. wth!!! SO, is it safe to say that since my hub crapped out that this is the perfect opportunity to jump over to Wink since they do have a restore process to a new hub? I’m gonna have to re-do everything anyways! Had I known this major exclusion of a migration tool from SMARTthings, I would’ve look to another option from the beginning to avoid this crisis of having to rebuild by entire Z-wave network. Things break eventually!!! Geezs!! Sorry for the rant…what’s for lunch?

Depends, will Wink work with the devices you currently use with ST? And are there any automations you couldn’t recreate with Wink?

You might want to check out Hubitat, which has a lot in common with ST, but offers backups and is much less dependent on the cloud.

Ben left SmartThings a long time ago…

Hi @ogiewon. What’s the latest on this?

You’re kidding, right? Samsung/SmartThings has made zero progress on a backup and restore/migration utility. I am pretty sure that they actually came out and publicly stated that it was never going to happen.

i don’t know if I’ve ever seen that stated. But either way, Ben has been long gone and there is no sign of a migration utility being publicly released yet.

I see you’ve been working hard at this . . . for 3 years! I would not have bought an upgrade if I know I had to reprogram my ENTIRE ecosystem.

Actually I haven’t worked at SmartThings for 3 years.

Are you able to develop a backup solution? I’m sure most of us would be prepared a substantial amount for having a backup app/solution.
If my hub craps out, it will take me at least five full days to get everything going again, if it all.

People have been asking for a backup and restore solution for many years. It was promised at one point in time, but later scrapped by Samsung/SmartThings. Anything is possible, but I wouldn’t count on it ever happening. Other hubs do offer backup and restore capabilities, although you may still have to re-pair your devices. At least your custom code and automations are preserved.

Hey - I am going to use your instructions to attempt my v1 to the ST AC1300 dual band WiFi mesh router (hoping it’s the v3 version of the hub firmware since I can’t find a hub anywhere; don’t plan to use the WiFi component at all) but I have a few questions based on conflicting information I have seen in the forum.

  1. Should I create a second location for the new hub and as you did leave the first hub up? I have seen some posts where people have issues with this?

  2. Is there a way to exclude all ZWave devices for more than 15 seconds? I’m wondering if that’s enough time to add the device to the new hub?

  3. You mention all smart apps and device handlers remain in IDE so I assume all I have to do is publish to the new location created above?

Was there any gotcha’s I should be aware of?

Thanks for your help and direction…I am SO dreading this process.
