Ask Alexa or Alexa Helper?

I have never seen that error before…From your screen shot it appears everything is correct…What if you run your setup and put the variables into the code starting at line 36…

I will have to go through a full setup this weekend as Amazon has changed a few things lately and I want to make sure the instructions are accurate.

Let me know if that helps.

Did you ever get this resolved?

No, on vacation, so it’ll be a week or 2 before I get back to it.

Micheal, Well i have the Ask Alexa app installed and Amazon end configured. Believe it or not is is working! You are the MAN! I am running into one problem with garage door, which is only device that I currently have a pin set for. When I ask to open or close with pin Alexa says “I did not hear the correct password”. I have have the pin set to 1234 for testing purposes. When I disable pin in app for garage door Alexa will open and close. Alexa will also give status of door anytime.
Any ideas?

Thanks for your help,
Chris

Are you using the syntax “Alexa, tell SmartThings to Open the Garage Door Password one two three four”?

You may want to watch the live logging to ensure that it is hearing the correct password…you can make a screen shot and post it here if you are unsure of what you are looking for…

Yes, I am using that syntax. Here is what live log is reporting.
10:26:16 AM: debug I did not hear the correct password to open the Garage Door. %1%
10:26:15 AM: debug Type: door
10:26:15 AM: debug Param: undefined
10:26:15 AM: debug Num: 1234
10:26:15 AM: debug Op: open
10:26:15 AM: debug Dev: garage door
10:26:15 AM: debug -Device command received- 10:26:15 AM: debug --Begin commands received–

I think I found the problem…if you are using version 2.1.1, go to lines 1368 and 1369…Somehow I didn’t include the password as a number when I changed the password process…replace those lines with these:

 if ((op=="open" || op=="close") && (doorPW && pwNeeded && password && num>0 && num != password as int)) result="I did not hear the correct password to ${op} the ${STdevice}. %1%"
else if ((op=="open" || op=="close") && (!doorPW || !pwNeeded || (password && pwNeeded && num ==password as int) || !password)) {

This will be in the next revision, and I may push out 2.1.1a just so this is fixed…

Thanks for the notification and the patience while I looked at this…

I updated the GitHub code to 2.1.1a…this is the only change in that code if you don’t want to update it in the IDE on your own.

Let me know if this resolves it for you.

I was running 2.1.0. So I think I should update all to 2.1.1a. So I just need to copy and replace all? Should I publish besides saving?

If you are at 2.1.0 You will need to install everything new…Lambda code, utterances, intents, and the SmartThings code…if you want just ‘fix’ 2.1.0, instead of replacing lines 1368 & 1369 you would replace 1296 & 1297. Since the codebase isn’t separated any more, save and publish is always the way to get these to your SmartApp.

I would follow the instructions on the wiki if you choose to install everything… http://thingsthataresmart.wiki/index.php?title=Ask_Alexa

Looks like I will start from ground zero. I tried to update IDE and Lambda only. That did not seem to work out. Starting all new. Good practice for me, though. As always, thank you for your help.

I really don’t like the phrase “start over” as it is not necessary 99 % the time…if you mean just going through the steps and overwriting everything that is fine…but you really don’t need to delete and then start from scratch. This isn’t Windows

Let me know if you need any assistance. I will say your question did have me go through the code where I found a new addition from a couple says ago that was broke. So I am glad you brought this up.

hey Michael, was just trying routine “I’m back” and Alexa stating she doesn’t understand. She is able to run goodbye. I am running ver2.1.1b and Lambda 1.2.1.

I assume you are using Ask Alexa? Either way, the problem is probably the “I’m”…try renaming it to “I am back”…be sure to update the developer’s slots as well…

From a technical perspective, the Alexa can’t “hear” apostrophes…It may assume one is there, but the issue is that I strip them out before presenting them to the developer’s slots. Putting it in the slots might work, but I would try to stay away from contractions all together as (again) Alexa can’t tell they are in there some it is random whether it assumes they are or aren’t there, and then it becomes a computer equation…either they match exactly, or not…unlike human hearing where you can accept mistakes and still understand, Alexa (for the most part) can’t.

Thank you Micheal. I am using Ask Alexa. I have enabled 2 listed routines, Goodbye and I’m back. Alexa now seems to recognize I’m back routine. However when I ask to Run I’m back routine she says Cannot run I’m back routine because you do have it configured in ask alexa smartthings app. I do have that box checked under Modes/SMH/Routines.

I actually answered this above:

Michael, sorry to be a pest. Looking at this live log, should I still try to put something in slots?

8:07:19 AM: debug You can not run the SmartThings routine named, ‘i’m back’, because you do not have this routine enabled in the Ask Alexa SmartApp. %1%
8:07:19 AM: debug Num: undefined
8:07:19 AM: debug Param: i’m back
8:07:19 AM: debug Cmd: routine
8:07:19 AM: debug -Smart home command received-

You need to change the name of the routine to “I am back”, make sure it is enabled in your app, then update the slot to reflect that name. Or, change the name in the slot to i’m back…However, I don’t recommend apostrophes.

Michael, I found the slot where I can change to" I am back" from “im back”. I’m not exactly sure where to change the name of routine to I am back. Would this be in IDE?
