As posted in another thread. The official announcement will be tomorrow AM.
Itâs just like a movie trailer. Show some weird thing a pull it. Awesome marketing strategy ST!
That point is key. Using SmartThings and virtual devices you can do anything you want by actuating a virtual switch and having a SmartApp follow it. That means changing modes, executing Hello Home phrases (soon to be called Routines), or even controlling other web services.
I always forget about the big switch app. Also another great option if you donât want to deal with custom device types and as long as you donât mind a couple virtual switches in your setup.
Right ⌠thatâs how Iâm doing a lot of stuff currently via the Hue Bridge Emulation method, which only accepts on/off and dim level.
how did you get dim level to work?? my setup only does on/offâŚ
Is this integration controlled by Amazon? Sounds like Amazon has a baseline Home Automation control feature that ST will now be included in, which is great because you donât need an intermediary step; but it also means that direct access of Hello Home and Modes probably wonât be coming since they arenât universal to all home automation systems.
Thankfully as mentioned by several posters, STâs flexibility provides for âworkaroundsâ to make almost anything possible! Want to control your thermostat? Create a virtual dimmer and SmartApp to mirror its dim level to your thermostat!
Still, it provides room for @zpriddyâs excellent work that has Mode and Hello Home built in. Itâs cool to say âAlexa, tell the house to say Good Night!â
Sounds like it will be the same as what we already have with the hue emulator hack, which will probably eventually go away anyway so this is great!
Also it will be one less hoop to jump thru. Once itâs native to SmartThings Iâm sure the brilliant developers on this forum will do great things with it.
Way to go SmartThings!
Hopefully that is what the announcement will be tomorrowâŚor better
Scooby Doo voice: âoooohhh?â
I can see itâŚAlexa turn on âto 74 degreesâ where âto 74 degreesâ is a group in Alexa containing one on/off tile. I do that now with Wemo switches. âAlexa turn on Goodbyeâ, where Goodbye is a Wemo switch that also turns a virtual switch running the âGoodbyeâ phrase. Pretty rudimentary but works.
Even better - create a virtual dimmer named âthermostatâ along with a SmartApp that just mirrors the dimmer setLevel over to your actual thermostat. Granted that will only work if a temperature range of anywhere between 1-100 degrees works for you
I am working on a thermostat dimmer switches app now. I already have an app that uses virtual switches to control mode and the autofan.
@mattfrank showed me his code to setup a thermostat dimmer switch. I am just modifying to it set a dimmer for heatingsetpoint and and a dimmer for coolingsetpoint in one app. Eventually I will merge this app with my other thermostat app.
@DarcRangerâs post is exactly what I meant by my quoted post above
I love this community!
The Amazon Echo/Akexa now shows SmartThings option under connected home above the Wink. The Smartathings side of things seem not to be active yet. We are close.
Itâs NOW WORKING!!! BRAVO SmartThings, this is going to probably the best integration YET!!!
I was using the Hue Emulator bridge and this is more responsive in terms of timing as well.
Yup⌠working with native SmartThings connection! (⌠just as good as with Hue Bridge Emulator, though faster!) Having a little trouble with dimming requests, but Iâm probably just speaking too softly this late at night.
Happy Alexa Day!
Dimming works for me. I am eager to try my virtual switches that control my Blinds or my garage doors (MyQ), but I cant wake up the 2 kids and wife now, otherwise Alexa will be murdered today!
Working great and good deal faster than hue emulator method. Thanks SmartThings!!
What are the commands? I just linked it, but Iâm at work. My wife is home and I was going to tell her to ask Alexa something. (She will, of course, be dubious)
