I've been messing with Home Automation for about 15 years now. I started with X10 and HomeSeer back in 1999. Then in around 2005 invested into Control4 in my primary home and have been using it for 10 years now. It's a great system, very robust and feature-full with great home theater control capabilities. I'm now experimenting with SmartThings in my vacation home.
