My favor part the last line. Yeah maybe will allow you to have security over your own network. Until such time it is yours. Did anyone run by your GC before forcing users into this?
And I guess we just have to take at STās word too!
Itās a standard industry practice to give users an option whether they want to connect to discovered devices or not. You do not give that option. Thatās what pisses people off.
I see it all the time with UPnP. I turn it off. Why because I am given an option. Thank you @geko.
All zigbee and zwave devices require the end user to enter a pairing mode. Discovery is one thing, but adding it automatically is the issue. Even with hue, pressing the hue hub button shouldnāt also add all my bulbs automatically. It should ask me which ones I want to add.
This āfeatureā should have never been released in its current state. Nothing else in St security model acts this way.
@Aaron Reading up on this
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simple_Service_Discovery_Protocol that is listed in Live Logging. ssdpDiscover. Reading the 2014 DDoS attack methods. I proclaim not to be an expert in any of this but from a stand point of someone who has some knowledge of IT this not a good feeling and I donāt want this on my network.
Great job pointing that out Patrickā¦I guess my hub is going on itās own vlan now.
Most WiFi smart home devices use SSDP for auto-discovery, a.k.a. zero-conf. Itās not something you can disable because itās built into device firmware.
That is probably correct. But you still have to put the router or device in discover mode, correct? So I canāt see a device that would be in discovery mode all the time as a secure device. Is that fair? Certainly, you can choose not to broadcast your router name correct?
Since 6:28 the protocol has been run 5 times in Live Logging! edit @ 6:52
No, thatās not correct. SSDP devices are always ready to be discovered. Thereās no button to push like with Zigbee or Z-Wave devices.
Even the older smartapps for lan devices would discover first, present a list of devices found and then allow the user to create the devices. Please restore this fundamental opt in to adding devices.
Even the documentation follows this paradigm.
@geko Ok I believe I understand what you are saying. The z-wave reference helps! Thanks.
Personally, I donāt have a problem with the discovery, I want the choice about whether or not to add it to my account. And I donāt want to have to go through and remove it from my account again.
Every interaction with the app is physically challenging for me. A longer device list is physically challenging for me. Having to remove devices is physically challenging for me. Having to scroll to the next page is physically challenging for me.
So I only want the devices on my device list that I chose to have at my device list. I donāt want all of my housemateās stuff on there. And I donāt want to have to go through and delete them, either.
But the reasons why I want this choice donāt really matter. Other people have other reasons. Some people will want automatic inclusion of everything. But not everyone will.
I just want to be asked which devices I want to add to my account and not have to go through extra work to remove the ones that I donāt want.
So bottom line is everyone should have been given an option. I agree and support that.
On a lighter note. Can you tell I just ate dinner. Is it possible to broadcast into the SSDP a string of text from time to time? I might have a few messages for ST from time to time.
Hi, somebody knows what happen if I have my own Connect and my devices currently in ST, It will be deleted or they going to crash with the networkid?
IĀ“m still in 2.2.5 version
Well this new option has unleashed a world of work for me. This nifty feature has lost my connection with my 40 hue Lights and hub. I have to re-add the hue hub. Fun part is getting all my motion rules etc back in order. But the best part. Wait for it. My hue hub hasnāt been found yet. Also in the add things once you click on it you are out of luck getting out. Only option is Save. No cancel nothing. This feature doesnāt seem well thought out
You can read the developer docs on this here: http://docs.smartthings.com/en/latest/cloud-and-lan-connected-device-types-developers-guide/autodiscover-lan.html#impact-on-the-developer
Thanks, I will need to make others connect to avoid Automatic LAN to be searching and installing his own code.
Somebody think is it necessary to create an Automatic LAN Blocker ?. An app that create a dummy device to avoid the automatic searching and installing, like a black list.
Example : App : Automatic Lan Blocker Connect.
Will search by all sonos, wemo, etcā¦ It will find and create a dummy device to avoid install from Automatic LAN.
In this way the sonos do not log all activities in speakers if you donāt want
