Unwanted motion alerts since last platform update

I didn’t get a lot of these recently, but since yesterday, we’ve been getting several motion alerts while home.

I’m getting a lot too. Not fun.

I have removed ST motion sensors and rely only on Fibaro’s. Are the ST’s sending false alerts?

They are a combination of SmartThings and Peq. However, I’ve never seen any of my motion sensors detecting motion when there isn’t.

This fault has to do with SmartThings sending a notification / SMS when we’re home. the rule for that alert should fire only when mode is Away. Every time it sends the alert, there is actually motion in that area - I’m just not expecting the alert.

The motion also triggers the photo burst app, which is also set to only fire when mode is Away.

I’ve been having this issue with some of my door and motion sensors lately, too. Getting pretty frustrated with this system, to be honest.

Seems to be getting worse over that last couple days. I continuously get notifications that my doors are being opened, despite the fact that these alerts are only supposed to trigger when I’m away. At least it only actually set off the alarm once…

ugh.

This just started happening to me a few weeks ago. This can be EXTREMELY annoying for someone who has multiple motions sensors setup to alarm in away mode. I’m very disappointed to learn that this has been a known issue since July 17th and there still isn’t a fix? Come on ST.

Looks like this might be related to other mode problems. Make sure you’ve turned in a report to support@smartthings.com they are looking at this now.

@tyler The reports in this thread indicate new problems with motion sensors triggering events during the wrong mode for the last four days.

On the one hand I’m glad it’s not just me, but on the other it’s really annoying! I am getting motion alerts when I’m in Home mode also, but they seem random. Nothing for hours and then I get like 2 in a row somethimes back to back. I’m afraid of getting used to false positives.

I haven’t changed anything AT ALL for months so obviously something is not working on the ST end. Hope they fix this soon or basically the whole reason for owning this hub is out the window (and I’m definitely not upgrading).

I’m still having issues with this, updating support

I have the same issue with the only ST motion sensor that I am using with the Burst of Photos App. It is triggering while in Home mode. I noticed it last weekend. It only triggers with actual motion from the ST sensor that I am using with the app. All other ST motion sensors seem fine.

Fall cleaning in my township is just a few weeks away! Hoping that new generation of ST sensors will be much better and will survive the spring cleaning next year…

Just discovered these posts… maybe this explains the sudden dropping of my ecolink motion sensor, last motion detected Friday Aug 28 in the AM, nothing all weekend, although we were home all weekend, my kids were wondering WHY ISN’T THE LIGHT coming on upstairs when we walk around? I had to disconnect the detector, remove the battery, then replace and reinstall. It wouldn’t “find” the motion detector until I did this. Now it is once again functioning.

Monday AM I received a random notification during the workday that motion was detected IN MY HOME in mid-morning. No doors or windows had opened, and motion only occurred one time. No pets in the house, no reason for motion, and all was as expected when I returned home. But, if I cant trust the notifications, then… why do I bother with the system?

Was hoping someone could recommend a camera to connect with this system but now I am leary of adding any equipment.

I personally use 2 dropcams and 2 newer nest cameras inside. I use the Nest app for monitoring and has been working well. Native app.

Outdoors I have 2 Kuna lights (front patio and back porch) and they are working extremely well. No ST integration. Native app. Pretty much no false alerts on these even though outdoors. Alerts and recordings are immaculate.

Also, inside I have removed most of the ST motion sensors and use several Fibaro’s. Pretty much they are there just for the heck of it. Alarms are not tied to it because of intermittent issue whereby mode restrictions are not honored. I use the motion sensors just for triggering lights and do not rely on motion alerts. Also spiders, flies, bugs, breeze etc. may also trigger these…

I think there are 2 different issues

  1. This thread - talks about motion events happening when there IS motion, but notification and or actions are taking place when they shouldn’t be due to mode restrictions
  2. And this thread False motion alert by ST motion sensor! Hope so Which might more accurately describe @Jmeyer66 's report. Where notification should happen but there is question as to whether motion actually occurred.

Regarding adding a camera. I think its a great thing to have so you can verify issues and or record them when they happen. I like to use their notifications separately even though they are tied into ST. Sort of a fail safe to have two separate systems that can notify you of an issue.

@slagle I too, for some time have been getting alerts (and siren activation) when there IS motion, via motion monitor, but when mode is to be excluded. Example, my office is to activate my siren when there IS motion AND mode = night or away. It is doing it when in HOME mode.

Same with motion in my home. It is activating if there IS motion, when it is only to happen in the away mode.

Makes it hard to sleep if it activates in night mode and someone gets a drink of water.

I have deleted and recreated the apps to no avail. I’ll too open a ticket.

Thank you. Right now this is the best bet for everyone. We are really concerned about this but are having trouble find the “needle” in the proverbial haystack. If you do submit a ticket noting an approximate (or exact if you can) time it happened, I think, is the best information we can have now so we know where to look in logs.

I did open a ticket, and have deleted the smart apps again, and recreated them.

Since then, I have not had a reoccurrence… Knock on wood.

If I do, I will update the ticket. I do have historical info, should I get that to you?

All information is valuable

The logs for the siren just before through just after have been added to the ticket. Thanks!
