The Next-Gen Z-Wave Ultraloq Built for SmartThings (No Extra App Needed!)

Hey SmartThings community,

I’m part of the team at U-tec, and we’ve got something I think a lot of you will be excited about — especially if you’ve been waiting for a truly seamless Z-Wave smart
lock experience.

We’re launching the Bolt Z-Wave Lock, built on the brand new ZG28 platform. It’s fully Z-Wave LR capable, backward compatible, and works directly with SmartThings — no extra apps, no custom device handlers, no hoops to jump through.

Here’s why it’s different:

:white_check_mark: Native SmartThings Compatibility
You can set PINs, lock and unlock, and manage everything directly through your SmartThings hub. No more relying on a third-party app just to do basic tasks.

:white_check_mark: Z-Wave Long Range Ready
This is one of the first locks with Z-Wave Long Range support. That means way better signal strength and up to a mile of range in ideal conditions. It’s perfect if your hub is a few rooms (or a floor) away from your front door.

:white_check_mark: Ultra-Low Power Efficiency
We’ve optimized the hardware for long battery life. You’ll get over 30 percent better performance compared to older-gen Z-Wave locks.

:white_check_mark: Full Command Class Support
Everything from User Code, Credential, Supervision, and S2 Security is supported right out of the box. If you like running advanced automations or want full control, this lock has you covered.

:white_check_mark: Certified and Interoperable
It’s been tested and validated to work with platforms like Alarm.com and Z-Wave PC Controller, and it pairs effortlessly with SmartThings. We’re also evaluating Home Assistant support for those of you who like to experiment.

Whether you’re setting up a smart home for the first time, expanding your Z-Wave network, or upgrading an older lock, the Bolt Z-Wave is designed to give you full control without needing to jump through extra steps.

If you’ve had your fair share of frustration with limited Z-Wave lock support, this one’s worth checking out. Feel free to drop any questions below — we’d love to hear what SmartThings users think.

Thanks for the update!

One note: zwave long range features are only available if the hub supports zwave long range. Unfortunately, at the time of this posting none of the Z wave hubs that work with smartthings do support Z wave long range. (The newest of these is still zwave 500.)

When will this be available and what price point is it going to be at?

The price range would be $119 to $149 but is not sure for now.

Thanks for pointing that out, @JDRoberts — you’re absolutely right!
Z-Wave Long Range (Z-Wave LR) functionality does require a compatible hub that supports LR. While the current SmartThings hubs (including the latest Aeotec version) only support up to Z-Wave 500, we designed the Bolt Z-Wave LR lock to be future-proof, fully certified for Z-Wave LR now — so once LR-capable hubs become more widely available, the lock can take full advantage of that extended range and power efficiency.
In the meantime, Bolt ZWA still works great with existing Z-Wave hubs in standard Z-Wave mode — and we’re working closely with ecosystem partners to support the transition to Z-Wave LR as new hardware rolls out.

Appreciate your insight as always!
