System put me at risk

you need to get on with a hybrid solution, i am now using Openhab for my regular zwave automation in a secondary controller configuration. its working far more reliable. but i am still loving SmartThings for its ease of use and expandability . I’ve now made a vow now to stop bashing ST, unless of course they really do deserve it. i’m just thinking that they really must hate rocking up to work every day and will lose their motivation. so i am gonna big up the +'s and only do the -'s when they really F&^% up

Just because you can’t imagine doesn’t mean that Samsung can’t. The intent is to sell TVs, not to run home automation from them (other than in advertisements and marketing).

Even though it is an inferior design. HaHa. Nice.

This is what I did as well when my wife had enough of ST. I moved everything to OpenHab and it has been rock solid since then. I was going to sell my ST hub but decided to keep it and use it on a few devices that do not matter. I will keep playing with it to see if it ever matures to a point where it is a viable product in our household.

read the vera forums. You think smarthings has issues?

I went through 4 different hardware versions and umpteen software versions and it was basically as flaky as smarthings. Just not supported at all.

they have a beta program unlike smarthings. BUT they ignore the testers. So why bother…

some of the hardware i got from them gratis- they’d have to PAY me to go back to another one of their hubs at this point.

also be aware they’ve never hit a ship date- they sometimes comes close but then the software is about as reliable as pre-alpha.

Hi All,

I got a suggestion: Lets compare ST to insteon. I haven’t seen a side by side review. Does insteon have Zigbee/Zwave/IP connection? Any monthly fees? Stability? Processing (local/cloud)?

Insteon is a protocol. It has Insteon. Period. It’s like asking if ZigBee has Insteon. No, it does not. :slightly_smiling:

Insteon is also a company that makes a full line of hubs and devices that all use the Insteon RF protocol. I’m guessing that’s what @lmosenko is talking about.

Insteon hubs can control some IP devices, but the platform is quite closed. You won’t be building your own device types for an Insteon system. It cannot control Zigbee and Zwave devices, except through another Homekit-enabled hub.

Insteon devices look sexy as hell, and they seem well designed, but they’re also significantly more expensive than Zwave and Zigbee devices of the same class.

Processing is local, and I don’t believe the system requires a monthly subscription. Anyone have one of these systems?

Check out the Amazon.com reviews of their Hub Pro. The grass isn’t always greener.

Technically, yes, just like X10 was both technology and a company behind it. But I have never heard anyone ask “does X10 have ZigBee or Z-Wave?” :slightly_smiling:

My good friend has an Insteon hub and loves it. You can automate things like we do, on a basic level, but there’s no app community. I do believe you can write your own code, but good luck with that.

All processing is local, and he’s never once, ever, EVER had an issue with something not working like it should.

Okay let’s not get crazy. No HA system is that good. Not Crestron. Not Control 4. Not any of them.

Insteon switches and dimmers use power-line commutations, not RF, and therefore are not subject to the radio interference that kills both ZigBee and Z-Wave. There’re other sources of interference that affect Insteon, but as rule, it’s more robust in most situations.

As far as I understand – it does both powerline and some radio-based, as a redundant solution. It’s not “getting crazy,” to say his system is extraordinarily reliable. I think one time he complained about something, but it was a rule he had set up – not the hardware’s fault --ever.

Thank you @stevenascott. That PDF was the answer I was looking for. Straight forward and No criticisms for a basic question.

yup insteon is great up until you have an RCD circuit in your house like I do…it kills all power line stuff. If I use a 500mbps power line adapter I get less than 1mbps with huge latency because of huge numbers of retry attempts…after which you are then dependant purely on RF which is why I ruled this out.
On the plus side with the RCD circuit if I ever want to kill myself I cant choose the toaster in the bath method

Sorry, @lmosenko, didn’t mean to be rude or hurt your feelings.

No problem @geko. I was just interested in Insteon comp to ST. I have similar problem to @Fuzzyligic. Can’t use Insteon.
SmartThings will do and hopefully ST will get better…Soon.

Wait what? My schlage z wave lock opens or locks remotely via smart things…
