STs motion sensors used outdoors in protected entry areas

Besides Mike on a previous motion sensor topic, has anybody had any luck with the STs motion sensors being used outdoors in protected entry areas to send alerts when motion is detected at a front door? Not sure I want to go all in with Ring doorbell but I believe it may be compatible with STs? Maybe this is the way to go to include other functionality?

Would love to hear what others have used successfully and if Ring doorbell works well with STs system.

Thank you.

The question of what motion sensors to use outdoors is a good one, in fact you’ll probably find a dozen or more threads in the forums discussing it already. :sunglasses:

If you want a quick answer take a look at the following:

If you want an in-depth detailed discussion, see the FAQ:

As far as the ring doorbell, there is an official integration:

Yup have a ST motion on the ceiling of my front stoop. I dont call it a porch really but it isnt getting wet. its been up there for the life of my system so like 2 years maybe. V2 hub wasnt out then so thats how old it is. No issues, Tennessee weather so below freezing to 90+ days.

I had a GoControl ( MonoPrice) and replaced it with ST ( for no real reason other than appearance ) over a year ago. Outside lights on bright with motion, light on 10% on no motion. No issues. I think batter might be getting low since now a person has to be within about 20’ of the house, but a car ( larger heat signature) going by on the street still turns on lights, just not pedestrians.

Thanks folks. Looks like I’ve got options. Will review more to see what direction would work best for my situation. In AZ so hot and dry is environment. Should be able to keep sensor or ring doorbell in the shade most of the time.

Thank you again for your responses.

I have 6 of these and they work great. What is also cool I used another device made by this same company for a mailbox sensor that is about 300 ft from my house. These have a range of 1/4 mile

What is the model of the mailbox sensor? Does it integrate with ST?

Hey tweason,

Its the Dakota Alert DCMA 2500. The link in Mckenph’s post above is very well done and explains its integration with a STs.

Hope I followed your question right. I think this is what you’re looking for but I’m not sure. This one does intergrade with STs but to do so requires a Z wave switch wired to the main receiver for each transmitter (4 max). The transmitters talk to the receiver, the receiver has the Z wave switchs connected to it and this sensor’s change of state is detected by the hub which can then send you a text.
