Here are the automations that you can use so that you would only need 2 per button. Note that you need to select “When any condition below is met”.

Thanks harobinson, but in my smartthings UI I do not have “Smart Lightining” in apps, and I haven´t found where to install it. I just have “Smarter lighting” as Haid has posted:

And there is no way to select ““When any condition below is met”” because it not exist there. But no worries, I figured out how to make it works. I will send logs ASAP

This is not SmartLighting. This is just a regular automation routine You should see this if you select two devices in the “If” section.

Yes , you are right. I just noticed that now. Sorry my mistake… I will try this way next Routine that I create.

Here is the logs, I just have seted up buttom 2 and 3 because the others switchs there as not dimmer capability.:

Thank you for the logs. In my case, I see that the dimming function is rather unpredictable and may sometimes cause the slave switch to stop responding (need to power it on and off to have it respond).

I need to do some debugging to see if I can fix it.

I suspect that I have either not configured the Z-wave config parameters or there may be a side effect of using the proprietary commands to set the LED. This may require a few hours of “back to the drawing boards” to address.

In the interim, you can dim using the Smartthings UI, not pretty but hopefully that works for you.

Not sure if this comes in to play, but if you try to use both association and syncing via routine, it’s quite easy to end up with commands that are out of sequence. Generally, you should use one method or the other, not both.

Thanks. In this case, I disabled syncing but still see this phenomena.

As a note, I included the hub in the Association Group and I see the “START” and “STOP” Multilevel commands appearing but the switch starts misbehaving after the initial set. The switch stops responding until I power on/power off. It may be a case where I have downrev firmware on the switch (Leviton) but the prospect of my trying to update its firmware is daunting (I’m a MAC user).

I got it to work in some of my development versions and I need to see if I skipped some required setup steps when I cleaned up my code.

For what it’s worth the method of syncing two switches by triggering when “any condition met” can get itself into a loop just as the other methods.

I flipped the light on for the dog to go outside of of habit even though it was light enough not to need it. That switch is synced to a second switch using the approach described by @harobinson above.

I instantly realized that the light wasn’t needed and turned it off. The two lights proceeded to flash on and off repeatedly. I had to open the app and deactivate the two routines to stop the flashing.

Need to think about how to deal with this.

Yes, I have had experiences where the repeated flashes have caused the device to basically go comatose and require a breaker off/on to reset or in the case of the VRCS4 to require a factory reset. Trying to use the SmartLighting match with dimming seemed far worse.

It seems that the out-of-box Automations and SmartLighting may need some work as this is the right place to address, IMO.

@nayelyz – Any insight as to something that SmartThings have on their roadmap. One would think that having a reliable 3-way functionality as requested by @JDRoberts on a separate thread is a good roadmap item to consider.

Request:

Allow coordinated control of 2 (or more) dimming switches from Smartthings automation.

Yep, given the current functionality, race conditions are the norm. Of course, they happen at midnight when the remediation procedure is forgotten.

We need a REAL 3-way automation from the vendor. Thanks to the community, I wrote a rule that works but that means that I need to remember the rule when I reconfigure the switches.

When I started to try to maintain old – obsolete – hardware with the Edge migration, I just saw this as a daunting task. But given that I used to be a software engineer (many decades ago) and the community members like you gave me hints and help along the way, then I think I’m ready to keep my setup a few more years until the next technology ripens.

Hi Harobinson,

  The Edge Driver you created is fantastic for the VRCS4-MRZ.  The only issue/ question I am having is that when I set up a "routine", in the "IF" section under the Scene Controller in Routine I can choose Switch "1", "2", "3", "4", but in the "Then" section I can only choose Switch "1".  (ie you can setup a routine for "IF" Switch 1 "On" "Then" switch 1 "Off", however, when setting up "IF" Switch 2 "On" "Then" there is still ONLY a Switch 1 "Off" option, not a "Then" Switch 2.  Am I doing something wrong?

I was recently impacted by the SmartThings “unintended deleting of hubs/devices” - so had to completely redo everything. I have ONE device left to restore - the Leviton VRCS4-M0Z - very excited to see this Edge Driver, but I can’t seem to get it right - looking for some help.

Used VRCS4 Channel Invitation and added one of my two hubs (home)
Added both drivers
Did a factory reset of my VRCS4-M0Z (pressing button 1 & 3 to get solid RED LEDs)
In the Samsung App (iOS), clicked “Add Device”
On the VRCS4-M0Z, pressed button 1 & 3 to get blinking AMBER (program mode); after 3 seconds pressed 1 & 3 (exclusion mode) and then pressed 1 & 3 again (inclusion mode)

Can’t get the device added (it’s been quite a long time ago since I first got it originally working - I may have the step for inclusion wrong, as docs are sketchy). Any help would be appreciated!

I noticed that when I was building automatons but it didn’t affect me because I never used the switch buttons in the “then” clause. I will submit a support request to SmartThings to see if they or I can resolve.

Some news: I will be updating the driver (major rewrite) later this week after I conclude my testing. The new driver includes support for dimming for each button and fully integrated support for the dimming button.

I have also created a rule template that allows you to mirror the switch buttons to other switches. While not having a UI like automations (need to edit JSON files), it seems to be much more reliable than the automation method. The only bad news for you (based on your example) is that Rules don’t allow you to Run Scenes but there is a simple way to solve. Your rule controls a virtual switch which is included in your scene.

More in a few days when I push out the updated driver. I will copy you on the support request to SmartThings about your Automation failure and see if they can resolve.

Here is what I found seems to work. Sometimes, you need to include a few times:

Ensure that old device has been purged from Smartthings. My best method is to use the Smartthings CLI (“smartthings devices”) to list all your devices. If you see your old VRCS4, then issue the “smartthings devices:delete” and select the old VRCS4 to remove it.
On your device, factory reset the device RED LEDs. Remember to hold down the buttons an extra few seconds after solid RED appears, so that RED flashes a few times after you release the buttons. This ensures that you have done a full factory reset.
Once you have done that, then go to your Smartthings UI, select your hub, press Settings in the … in upper right, select the z-wave utilities, and run Repair Z-Wave Network. This should clear all old info about the switch and network.
Then you can follow the inclusion mode routine using the Add Device as described above. I have found that it may not work the first time (sometimes I had to repeat up to 3 times). At other times, the UI said no device was found but, in fact, a new device was added – that’s why I run “smartthings devices” from the CLI and it would show up there. Remember that for the M0Z, two devices are actually created, one the VRCS4 and a Z-WAVE switch for the load.

Note that I will be updating the driver in the next few days to include full dimming capability and provide a set of rules to allow 3-way mirroring with another switch.

@JDRoberts, I understand your point but in the case of the examples that you provided, the capabilities are defines as “buttons”. In my driver, each button has the capability defines as a “switch” and thus supports commands to turn on/off.

It’s interesting that Automations doesn’t allow actions on all switches while Rules does. I have defined rules that allows me to turn any of the VRCS4 buttons on/off. So this seems to be an inconsistency.
