Device handler is what makes a device work properly with ST. When you manufacture a device that says “works with ST” you should also have a device handler for it.
I personally blame the manufacturer.

Definitely a device that claims "Work with SmartThings"™ must be plug-and-play compatible with an automatically installed (ie, standard or platform published) DTH. That’s a trademarked restricted use certificated device designation!
But some products use the term without authorization or just claim to be compatible with either a cut/paste DTH, or by sharing the signature of a published DTH.
Do you have examples of things that claim SmartThings compatibility… but aren’t?
