I fell into having MyQ garage door openers, so here’s how I made them into virtual devices in SmartThings, controlled them with IFTTT, and connected them to Google Home, so I could use ST routines and Google voice control to close them.
I installed a new LiftMaster opener, simply for the reputation of the DC motor, thinking I wouldn’t really lean into MyQ (silly me). After installing the MyQ app, I picked up a Chamberlain Internet gateway from eBay and connected my second, older LiftMaster opener. That gave me two garage door openers controllable via MyQ—what a time to be alive.
I found IFTTT is still around, makes a decent bridge between MyQ and SmartThings, and their free tier gives you 2 free actions.
SmartThings can’t see MyQ, so I used TAustin’s awesome vEdge Creator to create two virtual garage doors. With only 2 free IFTTT actions, you’re pretty limited, so in my setup, I decided to create routines that, when the virtual garage doors are closed, instantly set them to open. This won’t actually open the doors, and, obviously, you can’t trust the virtual door status, but this makes them handy for routines and voice-controlled assistants that you want to use to close them, which is how the majority of my household uses anything in my home. With that in place, i added the virtual garage doors to all the SmartThings routines that close up the house (geo-fenced away routines, goodnight routines, etc.).
Back to IFTTT, I created two applets that, when the SmartThings virtual doors switch to closed, actually close the MyQ garage doors.
Now to Google Home. After refreshing the SmartThings connection, Google Home can see the vEdge virtual garage doors, so it works to say, “Hey Google, close the garage doors”, to close either one by name, or to summon any goodnight/leave routine that closes the doors (if you have those set up). Also, the actions only work one way; i.e., voice control doesn’t open the doors, which is how I prefer it for peace of mind.
Hope this helps someone.
