Samsung SmartThings Trackers (Not smarttags?) Moving to Find App

Samsung SmartThings Tracker Shutting Down

https://www.androidheadlines.com/2026/09/samsung-smartthings-tracker-service-shutdown.html

Huh? The notice in the app says it is shutting down the Tracker service. The Tracker is a completely different product to SmartTags. What on earth are they talking about?

I think the more closely you look at Samsung’s own terminology, the less likely it becomes that this announcement is about Galaxy SmartTags.

Samsung actually had a product called SmartThings Tracker, a standalone GPS/LTE-M tracker introduced in 2018. Samsung’s original announcement describes exactly the functions mentioned in the new shutdown notice: location tracking, notifications and geofenced zones in the SmartThings app.

More importantly, Samsung’s old Tracker terms of service literally call the backend “Tracker service” and define “Tracker products” / “Tracker devices”. They describe location data, geofence zones and even activation of the device’s cellular connection using its IMEI. Samsung’s current support page for SmartThings Tracker also explicitly says that SmartThings Tracker is different from SmartTag or SmartTag+.

That makes the wording in the shutdown notice - “Tracker service features, such as location checking and notifications for Tracker devices” - a remarkably close match for this old service.

The claim that Galaxy SmartTags are being removed from SmartThings appears to be an interpretation added by SamMobile and subsequently repeated by 9to5Google. It isn’t actually stated in the Samsung notice they quote.

Unless Samsung has decided to reuse the exact name and terminology of its old Tracker service for something completely different, this looks much more like Samsung is finally shutting down the legacy SmartThings Tracker backend. I would therefore be very cautious about concluding that Galaxy SmartTags are affected until Samsung says so explicitly.

Agreed, removing SmartTags from the app would negate a huge portion of their functionality - automations.

Would like to see some official confirmation that this announcement is just for the Tracker devices. That should have been clarified in the notice, not left for speculation and interpretation based on service names. Every blog is reporting it’s SmartTags.

The notice seems to have been removed from the app. Hopefully they’ll consider how few of their audience of eleventy billion will have even heard of the Tracker, let alone the Tracker Service, and try a tad harder.

You can see similar laziness in a prior notice about the Ambient Service. By contrast the ‘Check for crying’ notice shows that they can do it when they try.

Now let’s see if I can post this in the right place instead of an eight year old thread I’ve never read …
