Replacing Hub / Action Tiles

Hello, I have the what I believe is the first version of the Samsung Wi-Fi mesh network which doubles as a SmartThings hub. Recently been having issues with the Wi-Fi cutting out for 30 seconds or so periodically throughout the day. Worked with my internet service provider to remove that from the equation so its down to the hub.

Now my question for you smart people out there is what would be my best option for replacement that wouldn’t need a bunch of work setting everything back up with action tiles / routines etc. I would also like to keep a with a mesh network if possible. There doesn’t seem to be a direct replacement option? My hub does not have the “Hub Replace” option.

I should mention I do not have or need Z-wave/Zigabbe functions.

Appreciate any suggestions.

If you have no z-wave or zigbee devices, what is connected to you SmartThings hub?

All my lights which is through Lutron, my DACOR appliances and garage doors etc. All connected through Wifi.

I just replaced my plume wifi hub at my families house because the main hub died unexpectedly. I was able to use replace hub to change it to an older V2 hub i had laying around. Transition was flawless. To get to replace hub however since you cant click on the hub since its offline. Go to the home tab in smartthings, then the 3 dots in the top right, manage hubs, then you can select replace hub in the next 3 dot menu.

It’s not clear to me that you have any need for a SmartThings hub. Using the app does not require having a hub.

So you can get any kind of WiFi mesh system you’d like. Set it up with the same SSID and password as the dying system and it should be an easy transition.

@JDRoberts is probably better able to answer this.

As @HalD mentioned, if you are only using WiFi devices (and not Matter over WiFi), then you don’t need a hub. Just get a new WiFi system.

But if you do want to use Matter, you’ll need some kind of ST “matter controller,” which is typically a hub or a Samsung smart tv or appliance.

Thanks for the response. I am not very technical with all of this stuff. I guess maybe ill explain a little further of my set up to double check what your suggesting will work. I have the mesh network as described which doubles as a SmartThings hub. I have wall tablets throughout my house running action tiles through a fully kiosk browser. I set this up 6 years ago following some you tube tutorials - it took forever lol. My understanding was action tiles communicates with the smart hub to run my routines and control my devices. With no hub how does this work?

SmartThings is, at heart, a cloud based system. ActionTiles runs in the cloud and communicates with the SmartThings API in the cloud.

Hubs are only required to provide SmartThings with a presence inside your home for communicating directly with devices on your LAN or with devices on personal area networks (Zigbee, Z-Wave, Thread). They also have the capability to run some automations locally for devices they control.

Certain ethernet or Wi-Fi based devices may communicate directly with a SmartThings hub, but many more actually communicate with their own cloud which in turn communicates with the SmartThings cloud.

If you don’t have any such devices then you don’t need a hub.

Very Interesting! I have been chatting with SmartThings support and they told me to try a factory reset to fix my issue but warned me I would loose all my routines and would have to add all my devices back and set up from scratch. But from what I’m hearing I can do the factory reset and not have to worry about loosing anything.

ActionTiles does not require that you have a SmartThings/Aeotec hub. The company founder verified this in their support forum.

The communication is between your actiontiles account in their cloud and your smartthings account in the SmartThings cloud.

The license is based on location in the SmartThings app, but you can have a hubless location.

Did you perhaps mean to tag @625alex from ActionTiles instead of me?

Sorry, My bad. :face_with_open_eyes_and_hand_over_mouth:

OK so I factory reset my existing smartthings mesh WIFI to try that before buying a new WIFI mesh network. That didn’t solve my issue so I will still need to get a new mesh network, but I can confirm all my routines and devices still work within the smarthings app and MOST of my stuff still works through action tiles with exception of my routines. I believe this might have something to do with creating a new virtual switch? Any help would be appreciated - further info below to help solve this.

This is what I see in the web browser for smarthings under rules. It says these are disables and when I click on it I get the error 403.

When i physically press the routine button on my tablet running action tiles I get the error “Error 500: Unable to process command”

I can run the routine within the action tiles web browser when I click on the below

All other devices on my panel running action tiles work. Turing a single light on or off for example. Its just the 2 routines I have that are no longer working.

I’m thinking this might have something to do with setting up a new virtual switch. When I research how to do that they say this can be done from within the smartthings mobile app “To create a SmartThings virtual switch in the mobile app, go to Menu > Labs > Virtual Switch. From there, tap the + icon to add a new switch, give it a name, select a hub and room, and then tap Save “ however i do not see the Virtual Switch option.

Any help would awesome!!!

Virtual switch creation via labs may be region locked. What county are you in?

You can also create virtual switches in a couple other ways:

  1. use the Advanced Web App. Go to devices and add a device to create a switch,

  2. use @TAustin ‘s Virtual Devices v2.95 edge driver to create a variety of virtual devices

I live in Canada

Using Labs to create virtual devices works in the US. I don’t know about Canada. Try the other options I gave you.
