Reliability of ROUTINES?

I currently have 45 automatic routines and 23 manual routines. I’ve not seen any of them misbehave recently.

A long time ago I created what was then called a Scene to turn off about 25 or 30 Z-wave switches and dimmers. That didn’t work well, always seemed to miss a couple of devices.

I ended up breaking it down into 4 or 5 “smaller” Scenes and tying them together via an Alexa routine. I used a 5 second delay between triggering each smaller scene. It seemed like there was an issue with too many commands flying around the mesh too quickly.

The Scenes are now Manually Run Routines, of course, but I still mostly trigger them via Alexa.

This isn’t unique to SmartThings, IMHO. It happens on other platforms and, I believe, the reason may be somewhere in the way Z-Wave mesh messages are handled. Perhaps it is in the Z-Wave libraries used by hub manufacturers–I just don’t know and have no way to verify this hunch. Your type of solution has helped me in the past, as well. Break ‘em up and let things get “caught up” before handling the next batch.

It’s just over time so many of us have the same experience. JMO…

Yeah, there’s definitely something wonky in the SmartThings Z-wave implementation.

I’ve got an open concept home so there’s a big room that is kitchen, dining, wet bar, living room. Plus it has the front door and multiple doors to porch and patio. Because of this there are somewhere over 30 switches and dimmers around the room that control interior and exterior lighting.

When I set them all up with Z-wave devices it was a mess. Commands dropped, devices falling offline, multiple issues. I swapped out about half a dozen devices for Zigbee and it all got resolved. The devices were fine and got used elsewhere.

It just seemed like I hit some kind of maximum “density” in the Z-wave mesh.

I’m not convinced by issue has to do with the devices or the z-wave mesh. There are times the routine only partially executes, at other times I can manually run the routine 5 times and it doesn’t execute until the 5th button press. Perhaps a network/wifi/cloud issue causing more of the trouble for me. In most cases I’m getting the “green check” on the manual routine button, which would lead me to believe it has executed, but it does not.

Hi,

Just checking in, are you still experiencing this issue?

If so, could you please try to reproduce it and share exactly what happens? It would be very helpful if you can include:

  • A step-by-step description of what you did
  • The exact timestamps (including your timezone) when the issue occurs

Also, please make sure to enable support access to your account so our team can take a closer look.

  1. Confirm the email account registered in the forum is the same one you use for SmartThings. If not, please share it with me over DM.
  2. Enable support access to your account:
  1. Go to the SmartThings Web (my.smartthings.com)
  2. Log in to your Samsung Account
  3. Select Menu (⋮) and choose Settings
  4. Toggle on Account Data Access
  5. Select the time period and confirm - In this step, please select “Until turned off”, once the team finishes, we’ll let you know so you can disable it again.
