Heatit Z-Temp2 is a battery-operated thermostat (3xAA) designed for use with water based heating systems. It’s a completely wire free system which allows you to place the unit anywhere you choose and control other devices remotely. The thermostat has a built-in Z-Wave Plus chipset with a temperature and humidity sensor. It also supports child lock for locking the controls. It features a proximity sensor and adjustable automatic brightness controls.

WHERE TO BUY THE THERMOSTAT

  • Z-Temp2 can be purchased from Heatit.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

Device handler installation instructions can be found here. Once the device handler is installed, pair the device with the hub:

PAIRING INSTRUCTIONS

  • Make sure the device is within 5ft of the hub and sometimes rebooting the hub helps before pairing and keep the ST mobile app open
  • Remove the battery cover from the back of the thermostat
  • Pair using S2 mode for improved reliability, from the new ST app, click +Device → Select Generic Z-Wave Device from the list and then follow the instructions. You can find the S2 pairing QR code/DSK key code on the device box or on the rear of the device if required.
  • Press the link button 3 times quickly
  • When it pairs successfully it should say INC on the thermostat screen and within 30 seconds the device should show up on the ST app. If it doesn’t show up, reset the thermostat, reboot the hub, bring the device closer and try again

EXCLUSION INSTRUCTIONS

  • Make sure the device is within 5ft of the hub and sometimes rebooting the hub helps before pairing and keep the ST mobile app open
  • Remove the battery cover from the back of the thermostat
  • Start the device removal or exclusion process on the SmartThings app
  • Press the link button 3 times quickly
  • When it excludes successfully it should say ECL on the thermostat screen. If it doesn’t exclude, try to reset the thermostat

FACTORY RESET

  • Remove the battery cover from the back of the thermostat
  • Press and hold the link button for 20 seconds, the thermostat should display rES

FAQ: HOW TO CONTROL EXTERNAL RELAYS

  • Since Z-Temp2 is a wire free system, to link it with external relays, e.g. the Heatit Z-Water, use the Automation Tool in the SmartThings app (or WebCoRE/CoRE) to create a rule to turn on/off the Z-Water relays when the Z-Temp2 operating State changes to Heating or Idle. Here’s an example with a single relay, you can have a single thermostat control multiple relays (click to enlarge):

Thank you for this device handler. Can this be used as a Z-wave thermostat in each room (zone) with any home automation systems - such as zoning smartapps that control my keen vents and ducted HVAC systems with furnace and central AC?

Can the proximity sensor serve as a room occupancy sensor?

These are standalone/portable thermostats, i.e. they don’t physically connect to any wires or heating devices. So if you’re using external relays to control your heating (furnace, heaters, radiators etc) you can use this thermostat along with the SmartThings Automation tool to control your heating (like explained in the first post). So the thermostat can be next to your bedside while the switches/relays can be anywhere across the home or on any floor.

These are different from traditional thermostats and SmartApps used to program traditional thermostats because traditional thermostats physically connect to HVAC’s or heating/cooling devices using wires and control them directly. This thermostat doesn’t, so you’ll need to use the SmartThings automation tool or SmartApps which support controlling relays/switches to control temperature (like this listed in the first post).

The proximity sensor is used to turn on/off the thermostat display LED’s to conserve the battery, it only activates when you’re within a few inches of the device so it can’t serve as a while room proximity sensor. However some of the SmartApps in the first post like the Motion Sensor Thermostat with Remote temperature sensors, Presence detection and Schedules support using regular/standalone motion sensors as proximity sensors to trigger the thermostat heating/cooling only when someone is in the room.
