Recurring Thread disconnect every 30 days with Ultraloq Bolt F Matter on SmartThings

Hello,

I’m looking for help with a recurring issue involving my Ultraloq Bolt F Matter lock connected to SmartThings over Thread.

  • Ultraloq Bolt F Matter firmware: 2.34 (234)
  • SmartThings Hub firmware: 000.061.00006
  • Matter over Thread
  • Healthy Thread mesh with multiple Thread Router devices available
  • The lock is often able to connect directly to the SmartThings Hub without using a relay

Approximately once every month (very close to every 30 days), the lock suddenly goes offline in SmartThings.

This has been happening consistently for several months and appears highly reproducible. The lock works perfectly for weeks, then eventually drops offline and stays that way until some form of network intervention is performed.

What’s strange is that none of my other Thread devices experience this issue, including both battery-powered and mains-powered devices.

If the lock is currently using a Thread Router (for example a smart plug acting as a router), I can usually restore connectivity by:

  1. Turning off the breaker powering that router.
  2. Turning it back on.
  3. The lock reconnects shortly afterward.

If the lock happens to be directly attached to the SmartThings Hub, then I typically have to:

  1. Reboot the SmartThings Hub.
  2. Wait for the Thread network to recover.
  3. The lock reconnects.

Removing and reinserting the lock batteries can also help, but not always on the first attempt.

My impression is that the lock sometimes only recovers when it is forced to establish a different Thread path or parent/router relationship after rejoining the network.

I also have two Heiman Thread smoke detectors that exhibit very similar behavior. However, my main concern is the Ultraloq lock because several critical home automations depend on the lock status.

Interestingly, some of my other battery-powered Thread devices, such as IKEA Thread contact sensors, do not appear to have this problem.

Troubleshooting Already Attempted

  • Verified lock firmware is up to date.
  • Verified SmartThings Hub firmware is up to date.
  • Confirmed good Thread coverage with multiple available routers.
  • Reinserted lock batteries.
  • Tried proactively removing and reinserting batteries a few days before the expected 30-day period.
    • This did not prevent the lock from eventually going offline.
  • I have not yet tried rebooting the specific Thread Router before the failure occurs to see if that changes anything.

This lock is expensive and has become a critical part of our household automation. Many routines depend on its state, and the reliability concerns are becoming significant.

More importantly, if this happens while I am away from home, it’s a problem for the rest of the family because the lock can disappear from SmartThings until corrective action is taken.

At this point I’m honestly considering replacing the lock with another model if I cannot find a reliable solution.

  • Has anyone experienced a similar issue with the Ultraloq Bolt F Matter on SmartThings?
  • Has anyone seen a recurring 30-day Thread disconnection pattern with battery-powered Matter devices?

Any feedback, logs, diagnostics, or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Some of my battery powered IKEA devices go offline once a month.

Seems to be related to a bug in some Qorvo chips and that’s why IKEA is replacing them in the next hardware revision.

So find out if the affected devices are using Qorvo chips.

Keep in mind - What if the new lock exhibits the same behavior?

It is indeed a calculated risk, with the hope that we would be able to return it and obtain a refund if it does not work as expected.

On a more optimistic note, do you have any Matter-over-Thread lock models that are known to be stable and reliable that you would recommend?

My Nuki Ultra is rock solid.

(My whole Thread mesh is, with the exception of a few battery powered IKEA devices)

Do you have enough Thread router devices, like bulbs, strips, plugs in your Thread mesh network? Already answered in the original post…
