Query for app design using SmartThings

Hello guys,

I am new to SmartThings and want to explore it for personal interest.

I want to know that is there any way we can communicate to SmartThings Hub? I want to explore that using SmartThings Hub, I can develop my own mobile app with some personalized changes over SmartThings app. So the setup would be Sensors connected to SmartThings Hub and Hub communicating to mobile app.

Pardon me if my query is silly. I am new to SmartThings.
