Basically, I’m trying to help out an old woman who has a very basic smartThings set up in her home. Like motion activated lights and that kind of thing. It’s also partly a safety thing, like if I notice there’s been no movement for a couple hours there might be something wrong. I know Smartthings isn’t the most reliable platform to be doing this kind of thing but it’s the best I can do with my current budget.
So since she doesn’t use a smartphone, I am hoping to get something that will tell me when she’s not at home so that if there’s no activity I don’t have to worry. So really it would need to be something like a key fob that is easy to carry around. The ibeacon idea sounds great and it might be my best bet to look into it!
Thanks for all your help, it’s really appreciated!
Most people leave their house by the same door every time. So the easiest thing might be to check there’s been no movement and the last thing that happened was the Front door opening.
Again, it depends on details. If she has a cat that she lets out the same door, then you don’t get as much information from the door having been opened.
I like @JDRoberts idea of using a door sensor in combination with a motion sensor, so if there is no motion and the door sensor hasn’t been opened in the last x minutes then alert you or do whatever you want it to do.
There are other options if you do have a small budget such as a camera, this lets you both check in on her as well.
One of the arrival sensors would likely work well for you in this instance also, although you may get false negatives, i.e… it might say she’s not home when she is, so a camera is always a great idea.
I just realised that this was US based (the link I gave you), however I am sure with a google search you will find UK based ones if it is something you want to look into
