PEQ at Best Buy

lol! i’ll try

I have a super simple mounting system for these.

Don’t laugh!!

I use a large paper clip, with the large loop slightly crimped to make it a bit smaller. That snaps into the back of the motion sensor. Then I bend out the small loop however much I need, up to 90 degrees for one to point down at about 45°. This small loop can also be angled sideways some.

This contraption then hangs on a small Command brand hook. Like this:

Thanks for posting about the sale. I was able to pick up more motion detectors and door/window sensors for less than I had planned. I had one motion detector before and I hung it up using some old speaker mounts I had laying around. A white mount would probably look better.

Tim,

Thanks a lot for posting the sale, I was able to pick up 4 water sensors and 3 door window sensors from my local Best Buy in Geneva, IL. Anybody outside of Illinois get the same deal?

Nice! Glad to know we have some local Chicago peeps on here

They were on sale in Jersey also.

Got a few on sale today in California. Thanks again, Tim!

I did a little more checking into peq as well as the zigbee dimmer switch that’s available at Best Buy.

About 18 months ago, many analysts were saying why isn’t Best Buy doing something in home automation?

This was when Lowe’s and Home Depot and Staples were all getting started.

Best Buy did make a couple of corporate level investments, and some deals, and in particular it looked like they were going to feature peq in a big way. That’s all zigbee stuff.

But then Apple started making noises about homekit, and of course mobile phone sales are a huge part of Best Buy’s business, so they kind of dialed back the home automation push, and started giving Belkin WeMo some of the featured space.

So it looks like Best Buy is still kind of waiting to see what they should be featuring. They do sell peq items, but you have to look around to find them and they’re not given any more prominence than any other ecosystem.

Rumors existed that Best Buy was considering bidding for SmartThings prior to Samsung success.

Imagine that.

Guess it was not the best buy for them. Eh?

So it sounds like most the PEQ stuff is plug and play. Anyone tried the PEQ cameras?

The Best Buy stores in Northern Virginia (Reston and Sterling) seem to have good stock of most the products… and on sale.

Was gonna take a look at these today… Might get one…

I was thinking the same if on sale… at worst return it.

Report back!

Based on the manual, the camera is the I control 1000. That’s the same one that’s used by the Xfinity security system, ADP pulse, and a couple of others. IP addressable

As such, it’s going to be like any other IP addressable camera It will Not be immediately discoverable and workable with smartthings, but you may be able to figure out how to use it as an IP addressable device.

You can ignore any of the marketing verbiage about zigbee that’s referring to the peq system overall. Not this particular device.

Note the back label on the PEQ rebrand:

Doesn’t hurt to try it, but it’s not going to be plug-and-play the way the sensors are.

Hidden benefit of the water sensors. They have a temp sensor in them as well. I now have 8 more temp sensors… Cause I always wanted to know what the temp is under all my sinks.

@pstuart : Didn’t you know? Keeping the ambient temperature under the sink in optimal range is best at keeping… windex from going rancid? Yeah… uhm that… it… helps keep the “drink by date” valid!

whoa whoa sir…just stay out of the east side clearing out stock! Us outliers that live in Stillwater have to drive to Maplewood or Oakdale to get stuff. I am hoping to find some stock on sale when I get back from DC tomorrow!
