It’s July 2026 in the United States. I want recommendations on a SmartThings-integrated outdoor smart plug with energy metering. I would like to be able to switch power on and off. It needs to be water-resistant. The product should be Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) listed, such as UL-listed or ETL-listed. This is to monitor power consumption of a jacuzzi / whirlpool tub so it should also be able to handle that kind of load.
The choice of protocol does not matter, as long as it works reliably with SmartThings and one can observe the graphs and data. Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter over Thread, Matter over Wi-Fi are all okay.
Typically, a permanently installed hot tub is powered by a 240 V / 32 A (40 A breaker is also common) circuit, while some smaller “plug-and-play” models operate on 120 V / 15-16 A circuits. Even the 120 V models can run very close to the maximum rating of a standard smart plug for extended periods. Hot tubs are considered continuous high-load appliances because they can run heaters and pumps for long durations. As the previous answer outlines, you do not want to run this through a plug. You want a power meter, ideally an inductive clamp-style one that stays out of the high power circuit.
Google says there’s an Aeotec Heavy Duty Smart Switch which handles 2 phase 240vac upto 40A, it uses z-wave plus…so V4 hub wouldn’t work it, which I did pick up earlier this year… since I was looking to add a thread panel to my setup, and not sure if another smart speaker was something I wanted. Especially since apple wants us to pay for ai memory.
Another option is a smart magnetic contactor, where a shelly controls the lower 120vac coil that switches the 240V side. probably use a clamp on the 240V side for energy monitoring. Needs a housing for water protecting.
Still not something easy like a smart plug though, which is more the kind of thing that I was wanting…for an indoor application, though water protection could be nice. Just that it have to be something I could do…
I thought I ordered the MP22ZP from Amazon (US), but I ordered the MP22Z which does not have power monitoring. I looked extensively but have not been able to source the MP22ZP.
It’s less than 1000W load; it’s not 240V or high power in that regard. I think a regular 120V wired plug (outdoor rated) will be sufficient for this purpose.
Anything else, other than MP22ZP? (Unless you can find one in the US!)
