New Smartthings V4 Hub released, do you already know about it?

Post deleted

First, thank you for the information. This offers some hope to those of us who have key Z-Wave devices.
With respect to your second wave.eu link for: SKU: GP-AEOHUBV4EU

  • Wireless technologies: Bluetooth, Zigbee, Tread, Matter, Wi-Fi 2,4GHz and 5GHz

It mentions everything except Z-Wave.

Supporting Z-wave via a Z-wave USB device would be an improvement over not supporting Z-Wave at all.

It has not yet been certified for Z wave, and typically that gets done about six months before a production release.

Maybe they’ll be able to add an Aeotec Z stick to it?

And would there be an easy way to migrant from existing hubs? I have the v2 and the Aeotec Hub (v3) (the last one just for some matter locks). This sounds like a great thing, but I surely don’t want to have reconnect everything again and redo all my routines. Thanks.

Hopefully Hub Migrate will work for v2/v3/Aeotec hubs to move to a new hub model.

This is info about z-wave I have stumbled recently from undisclosed source:

Z-Wave on SmartThings Hub v4

• Protocol version: Supports Z-Wave Plus v2 (700 series), offering better range, battery life, and security.
• Device limit: Can handle up to 232 Z-Wave devices, though real-world performance depends on mesh quality.
• Security: Includes S2 Security for encrypted communication and secure inclusion.
• Local execution: Z-Wave automations now run locally via Edge 2.0, reducing latency and cloud reliance.

And this is interesting part too, Edge 2.0

Core Enhancements in Edge 2.0

• Unified Driver Framework: One driver can now handle Zigbee, Z-Wave, LAN, and Matter devices, streamlining development and reducing duplication.
• Modular Driver Design: Drivers can be split into reusable components—think of it like building blocks for complex device logic.
• Improved Fingerprinting: More accurate device matching using manufacturer codes, model IDs, and endpoint data. This reduces mispairing and improves onboarding.
• Advanced Logging & Debugging: Verbose logs, structured error messages, and real-time diagnostics make troubleshooting far more efficient.
• Secure Device Handling: Enhanced support for Zigbee Secure Mode and Z-Wave S2 Security, with better control over inclusion and rejoin behavior.

Sounds like something AI hallucinated.

I would believe that if it showed up as a certified device at the Z wave alliance, but it doesn’t. And as I’ve previously mentioned, most companies typically get their Z wave certification about six months before a product is released.

Of course it’s possible that the Z wave will come from an Aeotec z stick, in which case there won’t be a separate certification for the V4 hub. We will see.

Perhaps a hallucination, but it doesn’t look like 800LR–unless it is dependent upon a USB Z-Wave stick stuck (plugged :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:) into the USB slot. Probably a pipe dream…

From the Aeotec site:

That allows even better performance and reliability for your SmartThings build Smart Home as most of the automations and controls will run offline. So you can rely on your Smart Home, even when your whole home network is offline.

Local-first communication
for faster, more secure control

Is that so? So far there’s zero controls that will run offline since the app won’t work without cloud access to SmartThings. It’s probably a mistake, unless they mean control through automations using buttons…

100€ in Europe, guess I’m not upgrading, I was expecting something more in line of the Station.

Edit: Or maybe the local control is possible and the app connects via bluetooth to the hub, that’s why they highlight you can control SmartThings with the whole home network offline. Is there anything to share regarding the advertised local controls?@nayelyz

Edit 2: There’s also an interesting “Connects with other Matter controllers” highlight in the official picture, is that a Matter bridge we’re not aware of? Or maybe another mistake in the advertising and they mean it can work as Thread border router in other platforms?

No mention whatsoever of Z-Wave. The only possible hope is that it says it has a USB-A port with “no function yet”. It’s possible that the “yet” means some functionality is eventually coming, and that functionality is support of a Z-Wave stick, but that’s a lot of unfounded hope to place in the word “yet”.

I note it says up to 150 devices. The limit for the v3 hub is supposedly 200. I hope that’s not a downgrade.
One of my incentives to upgrade is that my v3 hub is on soft limit, and I have 135 devices, although it really doesn’t feel very many, some of these are virtual devices.

If the 150 limit only applies to zigbee devices that’s less of an issue but I’m doubtful it is, its certainly open to interpretation.

This is connected directly to it, the Zigbee chip is standard, that’s what it supports, but using matter I believe it is bigger.

Aeotec plans to discontinue (selling the) V3 at the end of 2026

Will this be the end of this community for Z-wave users?

It also says it has ‘USB Expandability’, so that might be a good sign.

I’d have thought an external USB Z-Wave dongle would suit everyone.

Why is anyone surprised that there is no Z-Wave support? The Station has no Z-Wave and none of the appliances or TVs support Z-Wave, even with a dongle. Samsung has been clear that they are prioritizing Matter over Thread and Wi-Fi and Zigbee is along for the ride simply because it uses the same radio. Adding a Z-Wave radio via a USB dongle will only work if ST invests the time and energy in developing the necessary software to support it. I wouldn’t count on that given what we’ve seen and heard for the last few years.

Hi, @mocelet

Sorry, but our team doesn’t have information on any new or future features. Therefore, we cannot answer this kind of question, and can only suggest staying tuned on the Announcement section or maybe ask Customer Support to see if they have further details.
