Hey , i have a kerosene tank for my heating fuel and im wanting to try to monitor the level of this tank via a vertical float switch using magnetic reed switches to open and close contacts . I had imagined using a fibaro universal sensor to do the reporting back to ST but have heard mixed reports on reliability .
Has anyone tried anything like this or perhaps a water tank or similar , im open to different ideas on how to do it i just dont want to get stung with the universal sensors if they are no good
For reporting mechanical switches back to Smartthings I use wet/dry sensors
Just cut the plug off the end and you use the mechanical switch to connect the wires
Some door sensors also have the ability to connect extarnal switches
(Have a look at the Fibaro door contact switches)
This is the easiest way I have found to get external contacts etc to report to Smartthings
Same idea as @Cobra posted but a GoControl door/window sensor has an internal and external sensors and could be use independently from each other. You could use the Reed switch for half full and the contact for full/empty.
