LED Lights still glow when outlet turned off

I added a new Leviton DZR15 duplex receptacle with the intention using it to schedule when my Christmas lights are on.

The lights on the Christmas tree are LED lights that I picked up at Wal-Mart a couple of years ago, and I am not sure of the manufacturer.

The issue that I am having is that the LEDs never fully turn off. I think this has something to do with the LEDs requiring very little electricity to light up. Is there anything that I can do to get the lights to go completely dark?

Known problem with the older Leviton models although the newest ones are supposed to solve the “low glow” problem.

Easiest way to solve it is to add an extension and plug a night light with a 4W bulb or a phone charger into the other side as that will generally raise the current just enough to cause the outlet to turn off fully.

I know it sounds weird, it just has to do with some technical issues. It comes up every year around this time as people use these devices for Christmas lights. See the following thread

Leviton lamp module won't completely turn off

I used to have a string of incandescent lights plugged into a Leviton VRPD3-1LW lamp module. That was working for a while but, when those bulbs burned out, I replaced it with a string of LEDs. However, it won’t turn off completely. In the lamp module’s off state, the LEDs are at about 1% brightness, so there’s a very small current flowing. Any ideas on how to troubleshoot it?
