Just got this "connected home" survey from my Insurance Company

How is hacking my lighting system going to cause a claim for insurance? Can a hacker start a fire or flood with my lifx bulbs?

Evil hacker makes your bulbs turn on and off rapidly, creating a strobe effect and triggering an epileptic seizure while you’re lighting your cigarette. You drop the lit match into the case of Molotov cocktails you were making for a class project on the history of guerilla warfare in socialist revolutions. Your automated fire-control system springs into action, activating the sprinklers you’ve installed in the ceiling and dousing the fire.

Bam! Fire AND flood claims.

I know LOL is way over used, so I will say I actually laughed out loud on this one!

It’s sold as a security system and risk mitigation platform.

Leak detector? Valve Shutoff? Security? Yes. All relate to risk mitigation and loss prevention.

If it fails to deliver, which ST’s legal dept has already said you are a friggin idiot to think it will succeed, loses could result.

The conspiracy theorist inside me tells me to never respond to a survey this like

Don’t some insurance companies offer a discount if you have an active whole home leak detection and shutoff?

I usually don’t like to get baited but you doubt waht I said so here is a few links.

There are so many articles do a search.

Who was that aimed at? Nobody here said anything at all about ST not having the flaws in question. The question at hand is what that would have to do with raising insurance premium rates for someone who isn’t even receiving any discounts based on having ST hardware and/or security service to begin with.

I am only saying I don’t think that the insurance company would send you a survery to save you money, just I don’t trust them one bit. So I am maybe a bit paranoid. I have had too many fights with homeowners insurance companies to trust them one bit.
