IKEA tradfri outlet

@tpmanley - indeed it is IOS13.3; makes complete sense since Classic was not affected and the IDE sees the device. Appreciate the feedback. Do I need a different plan for my Christmas lighting automation?

I know a fix is coming but I’m not sure on the timing. A potential workaround in the meantime is to use the Smart Lighting SmartApp which works in both the Classic and the new app.

Thanks @tpmanley. For seasonal expediency I’ll just use Alexa for now “make it jingle!” and will have a play with Smart Lighting when time permits.

I’m impressed. Looks like the New App in iOS 13 can see and control the outlet now, no errors.

Hi Chris,

How to reset via the pinhole?

Can’t find any Ikea information.

Grtn Ben

There is a button inside for resetting. Press it long. It will start glowing the LED for pairing.

Tnx, I installed the repeater in house halfway SmartThings hub and the bulbs outside in the garden.

I even found a DTH that shows the repeater status.

You asked about the outlet. The repeater is a different device but behaves the same regarding pairing. The DTH for both devices are natively supported by ST.

Never found info about the pairing/reset button.

The DTH shows the device nicely.

Hi, how did you manage to go about this? Thx

You just need to pair the repeater and it works. Nothing special. It is a stock DH. The app assigns the right one.

Other useful features will come with the new Hub firmware release, like this one:

Thanks!
Actually I eventually made it pair as a ‘Thing’. Looking at the device in the IDE, it had been assigned the type ‘Samsung Smart TV’. Hmmm. Changing the type, the best selection to be made was ‘Zigbee Repeater’, i.e no IKEA DTH was available.
Strange. Or, is it?
But now however the device shows up in the app and hopefully it Will start repeating…

Zigbee Range Extender is the DH what you need, but in theory, you just need it to pair, and that’s it is.

You will see in the IDE that devices will show up with Next Hop to your IKEA repeater.

There is a small pinhole to reset/pair the repeater. That was the solution. Not mentioned in the docs.

I have a SmartThings hub v 2, using the latest ST app and I have been unable to pair the Tradfri outlet even with resetting the outlet before trying to pair and during pairing.

Curious. I’ve always found them to be very easy to pair. They never seem to be in any hurry to do so but they usually do it first time.

The only real gotcha is that, depending on which set of instructions you read, you can be misdirected into doing something that isn’t actually a reset at all. These things are NOT a reset:

  1. Pushing the ‘reset button’ four times inside five seconds. That IS a reset on most IKEA buttons and sensors, but not the outlet.
  2. Pushing the ‘reset button’ for ten seconds. That is something else, again used with the buttons and sensors.

Out of the box, unless you’ve bought a kit, the outlet will usually be ready to pair when it is powered on. Whoever wrote the onboarding instructions in the app seems to have assumed that is the case. In the real world you’ll have been messing around with it already, or it won’t be brand new, or you’ll get distracted, so you’ll probably want to reset it again when you are ready. Plug it in, stick something appropriate in the pin hole under the LED until you can feel it obviously pushing on something, and then hold it down for about five seconds or so. By five seconds or so, I mean at least five seconds but definitely not as much as ten. Then release it. Don’t try and play chicken with it. You may find the outlet clicks on at this point, but what you should see is the white LED throbbing a bit.

You should be able to do that either before starting the pairing process on the app, or after. It almost certainly doesn’t really matter, even if it seems like it does. You then wait, usually just that bit longer than you are expecting.

Apologies if you already know all that, but I feel it bears repeating.

Well I don’t know where to start but all I can say is thank you, thank you, thank you. The 5 seconds or so did it. That was the precise formula for getting the IKEA outlet paired.

Thank you for your prompt response and your clear explanation.

I usually suggest you also down the manual and save it, for the next time you need the instructions.

But Ikea’s manual isn’t very clear; most of page 4 is talking about pairing the outlet to an Ikea switch. Only at the bottom of page 4 does it list the FACTORY RESET instructions, and the all-important holding the button in for 5 seconds.

Thank you for the manual
