IKEA tradfri outlet

I am from Croatia and I would like to buy some of those plugs. Do I need anything else from IKEA except sockets ? I have ST hub V3 and using new ST APP. What is process to add sockets ?

@MiranDalic You don’t anything else.

I bought two yesterday, plug them in, hit the reset button (you need a pin) search for item in St and add once found.

My plug was on the latest firmware, however at least currently the firmware of all ikea items can only be updated via the IKEA hub and if at some point the firmware is updated with a feature/bug fix you would need the hub also.

I bought the hub and remote as I needed to update the IKEA gu 10 light bulbs I use.

I have an outlet and remote away with a friend getting updated. In the mean time I thought a few of you may be interested in what’s inside these. They appear to be glued shut so the only means of getting in is destructive. So, here’s some photos of the internals of a UK outlet (I plan to build it into a light fitting)

*UPDATE
It appears that ST has added the DTH natively, no need to reset the device type. So the process is

#1. Plug the Tradfri in.
#2. From within the SmartThings app (I am using classic) go to add a thing, and let it scan.
#3. Push and hold the little pin switch on the side furthest from the outlet with a straightened paperclip. It should be a thin one because the hole is small. The light will flash, and the device will click, maybe 5-6 seconds after you start pushing. Let go.
#4. You should see the Ikea Tradfri identified in your found things dialog. Name it and use it to your satisfaction.

END UPDATE

Good day all! I am just hoping to get a rundown on the process here. Thus far this is an 84 post thread and information is strewn everywhere throughout it, so for those that TL:DR I am wanting to summarize the configuration of these devices.

And a disclaimer, there is no small part of self interest here, I have 5 of these things on their way to me now so I wanted to be able to call this post back up quickly and refer to it to get the job done

First step, go into pairing mode as below

To go into the IDE and change the device type you would

Of course the ‘type’ desired handler type would be ‘ZigBee Socket Power’.

To my untested knowledge, that should do it. If I still have the ability to edit this post, once I a have the plugs in, and configure them I will update this with my results.

Just zigbee socket will do it, I think zigbee socket power is intended for sockets with power monitoring, although either handler will work.

and a general reply to the thread
I’ve been trying a socket and button with updated firmware and while they still pair to smartthings there’s no sign of the button pairing to the outlet - not even the fading light on the socket indicating an attempt that it did before the update.

Thanks for the tip!

FWIW, these are being added merely to reinforce my ZIgBee mesh network. The fact it allows me to automate certain on / off functions is just gravy.

This is intended to support the Hampton Bay zigbee Ceiling fan controllers

I just updated my Power Socket to new version 2.0.022
According to update details it is just:

Bugfixes and performance updates

@Stepan_Sanda I just updated my own plug, but having problems adding it back into ST. Did your add back in OK?

All is good, for some reason NOW they are showing up.

3 questions to @Stepan_Sanda.

  1. What advantages are you seeing from updating your Tradfri plugs?
  2. How are you updating your Tradfri plugs?
  3. How did you verify your firmware revision?

My plugs were purchased / installed within the last month, and I believe the firmware might be the 2.0.022 but I don’t remember for sure.

I don’t think I need to update my plugs as there are no performance problems, and there has been no buggy behavior at all on them

@BigHoss In relation to

  1. You need the IKEA Gateway, I purchased it to keep my IKEA lights uptodate.

  2. IKEA Gateway tells you the version and 2.0.022 is the latest uptodate version.

I’ve got a Tradfri gateway but since I hooked the items I have up directly to smartthings I’ve never updated any of them. Do you need to unpair them from smartthings and pair them back to the gateway, update them and then pair them back onto smartthings?

If you wish to connect a zig bee device to a different hub like your Tradfri plugs to the Tradfri hub then you will need to unpair them from smartthings.

Yes, exactly. :sunglasses:

with 30 lights and 2 plugs that sounds like too much of a job for me then. Thanks for the info.

What is the compelling reason for you to update the devices firmware? New firmware often induces problems, so unless you are addressing a known issue, it might be best to leave it be

That’s true of some companies, not of others.

Historically, Ikea has introduced significant new features with their firmware updates, Including improved ZLL compatibility, HomeKit compatibility, etc.

If you aren’t having any problems, it’s a good idea to wait a month or so to make sure that there isn’t anything flaky in the firmware update, but IKEA is one of those brands where quite a few people do like to update the firmware at least once a year. But it can be a lot of work and it may not give you yourself any benefit. So it’s your choice. :sunglasses:

In other words, cost / benefit analysis
Kind of what I was going for
Honestly the worst firmware updates I have ever dealt with have come from HP
Although Dell had a loo loo of a firmware for the PERC Hard Drives a long time ago they referred to as BP00 that literally caused rapid hard drive failures.

Just bought the Tradfri outlet (I’m in Canada) and was able to add it quickly and it showed up as: IKEA TRÅDFRI control outlet/ZigBee Switch automatically. I don’t think I have to change the sensor type in IDE.

Let’s hope it acts well as a repeater (the main reason I got it)

Hi folks. Been lurking on this thread, just bought 4 outlets here in Canada on Black Friday sale. Have an interesting tale. Followed instructions outlined above (thanks all). Does anyone else have this:

  1. Reset, proximate to ST hub.
  2. In the classic App, search, find it successfully.
  3. Adds “IKEA TRADFRI control outlet”.
  4. Classic App can see it & control it - all is good.
  5. IDE can see it - all is good. Device type is a ZigBee Switch, it has a bunch of Ikea meta data.
  6. New App - all it not good. It can see it, however it flashes a “Can’t connect to device. Check device and try again”.
  7. Tried this on two outlets with identical results.

Strange that classic app can see it, not new. Am I stuck traipsing back to Ikea for a hub (and cheap ice cream) to upgrade the outlet? All from iOS 13 device.

Is it iOS 13.3? The team is working on a fix specific to that version that could be related to what you’re experiencing.
