GE Zwave switch to control fans

Can I use a standard Z-Wave switch (12722) to control my fans? I don’t care about speed control. The switches are working right now (from the wall), but don’t seem to want to pair with the ST hub.

I have the same switch on a light in the same box next to them and that paired fine so I don’t think it’s distance related.

Any ideas?

Can you see the blue light on it? Is the neutral connected?

I have the 12730 (fan control) and 12722 (fan lights) in the same box next to each other, I don’t see why you couldn’t use the switch just to turn on/off the fan but I’m no electrician.

You can try this option. Start the General Device Exclusion, and then turn that switch on and off a couple of times. This will try to find it, if it does, remove it. Then try to pair it up again. I’ve had to do this a couple of times with some new devices.

I am using a12722 to control my fan on/off and it has been working fine for over a year now. (Fan had a separate RF remote to control speed).

So I think the issue is with the switch itself.

I have the GE switches for my bathroom fans, and they work fine. I’ve found that I have to pull the “air” pin on the bottom of the switch, Open add new device in ST app, then plug the pin back in, and flip it on and off a few times, slowly.

Thanks all. Seems it took a power cycle on the hub as well as flipping the fan switches “slowly” to get them paired. Finally worked.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Btw, I saw someone mention the air gap tab. What is that for?

It allows you to completely cut power to (and through) the switch.

You pull the air gap when changing bulbs. Apparently there is still a bit of power that goes to the bulbs even if in the off position.

Ahh. That finally makes sense.

Thanks!

I’m using a 12722 switch for a fan in my living room. It won’t respond to the 12730 fan controller, I have 3 of the 12730’s in other rooms and they work great. Only issue is when I tell Alexa to turn on the lights in the living room, she turns on the fan as well. Any handlers out there to make the hub understand it’s not a light switch?
